I don't think anyone is dumb. He's just fallen in to the trap of believing his own 'common sense' is infallible and therefore everyone else is wrong.

Isn't that a textbook definition for stupidity?

Actually, that is closer to 'ignorant'. Some people think they are synonyms, but they aren't. ;)

Can you override it with facts when all facts that conflict with his "common sense" are fake?

There are things he knows to be true. All we have to do is suss out those things, and how they relate to Science to hopefully re-orient him.

Like if you dig a well at two points on the surface of the Earth, and measure the angle of the shadow, why are the angles different?

Why are the times different in each timezone? Why are all the planets in the solar system round, but Earth is flat? When you look at the camera on the ISS, why do you see this:

It's simply going to be a matter of getting buy in for him to try to prove us wrong. Then he will see.

They aren't totally unreasonable, just a little difficult to convince.

We have to approach them on a level of joint understanding. When we don’t agree on basic facts, it becomes very hard to find an entry point. The best way would be to show them something that proves the Earth is not flat. Unfortunately, I do not have the money to send each of them to space. But perhaps showing them a rocket launch might be a step in that direction. They were very skeptical of Elon Musk’s recent Falcon Heavy that put a car in space.

If the Earth is flat, then by logical extrapolation, all heavenly bodies must be flat. (No, not those kind of heavenly bodies, Raydan ) And if they are all flat, then it sure is some fucking coincidence that all of them are facing their flat sides towards us. And since the Sun would have to be flat for any of this stupidity to make sense, then there would be significant periods of dark as the Earth orbited around the Sun's edge on either side. Oh wait, do flat-Earthers even think the Earth revolves around the Sun?

Well seems like you've never really had a close encounter with a flat earther have you Dr Science! They have all sorts of bizarre made up crap to explain it all away ( even though it creates more contradictions and questions than they answer )

Different length of shadows and time zones : Sun is not billions of miles away and as big as evil Nasa says it is. Its much smaller and only about 3-5000 miles above the flat earth and circumnavigates around the Gleason mapped flat earth.

ISIS : Footage is all fake and green screened and on a non stop loop.

Curvature of the Earth from any high flying source : Fish eye lens

Other planets are round : Lies all lies, planets and stars all are mere flat 2D objects inside the firmament, the imaginary destructible dome that covers the flat earth. Nothing gets in and nothing gets out!

And this is just the beginning. Others include, no such thing as gravity, Why doesn't the water fall off if the earth is round by demonstrating pouring water over a bowling ball, Water always stay level and is not curved. Why is Australia not upside down or some say it doesn't even exist. So on and so forth.

P.S: Yeah the car is space footage is all faked too.

No amount of reasoning can win this level of stupid, like I always say they also belong to the don't show me the facts my mind is already made up club.

They do not. They believe the sun does this:

One of my favourites is taking a video of a helicopter while saying "Since the earth is spinning beneath it, the helicopter should be getting closer to me and it isn't! Therefore flat earth!"

So the water doesn't spill over. [huh]

What's on the other side? Nothing, rocks, God, or other people?

Do clouds rotate too? If not, what do they do when they get to the edge?

How high is the Sun? If it doesn't light the whole planet, it has to be pretty close. Even so, we should still see it all the time.

How can we get Solstices with this? Does the Sun slow down and speed up or change directions? I don't see how the poles can get 24 hour days or night.

I thought that a flat earth would be easy to explain, seems it's a lot harder. 8O

Ice wall. Clouds rotate. Not very high, and it's very small.

I haven't seen a response for solstices and longer night/day. I'm sure it's something to do with the fucking dome or some shit.

I was curious so I had to look it up. So various explanations. The sun changes speeds and changes altitudes? Also you can't see it from the other side of the "flat earth" because atmosphere refracts the light down towards the ground. This also changes the shape of the "spotlight".

So basically complete and utter bullshit.

That probably explains why, if you try to approach the edge, temperatures drop toward absolute zero. 8O

Also... see "Pacman Effect".

That's even more batshit than the ice wall that if you go near it you get killed.

Great, now I have a mark on my forehead from banging it against the wall after reading that. Honestly though, it was still less painful than reading that dreck. smh

I know. It's no different that climate change deniers, but I hold out hope that there is a magic string I can pull to untangle the knot. It's my nature.

And if I can't, then it's good exercise for me to get back to 'first principles' and remember why it is that Science is the best.
