Once upon a time the West thought it might be a good idea to let the Communists and Fascists fight it out over Europe and they'd end up destroying each other. It took 60 years and brought the world to the brink. I wonder if we'd get similar results if we let the Shia(Iran) and Sunnis(Saudis) scrap it out in the ME

Let's edit that to reflect the result of the Iraq War.

Iraq is still in a toss up because there is a poweful sunni minority(35 - 40%, including the Kurds) there, and with further American disengagement, the chance of civil war will likely increase

From what I understand the Iranians and many of the Muslim States in the area may well duke it out on their own.

The Israeli's may give them the best possible start as the Iranians have made no secret about what they would like to see happen to Israel.

I hope we have the good sense to stay out of this family feud. We have our own things to do here.

Personally I'd like to see some overtures for detente with Iran. They're the best of the lot, as far as I'm concerned. They are not given to Islamism, they hate the Taliban and Wahabbis, they have a rich culture, a relatively western lifetsyle (given their location) and a stable country. The mullahs and Ahmadinejad rule, but they don't have much popular support.

Might be a good idea if the Iranians truly aren't expansionists and aren't looking for a conquest over the infidels.

I don't think the Israelis would be very open to it at all though.
