If its that much of an issue and you really need the job why not lie? If they fire you then you can bring it up to the human rights commission and get a pay day.

I was straight when I started the job, but after I saw the Birdcage for the first time I thought, "Why not?"

Why would an employer care what you do in your free time? He can tell me what to do in the time he pays me, and that is where it ends... My lifestyle is non of his business. And I don't like lying...

Meh I'm quite biased, my employer is always interested in what I do in my spare time. Hell if I want to go to see the girl friend on the weekend I have ask my boss for permission.

Of course you ask her if she wants to see you

Military and civilian bosses are not quite the same, I am told  When my boss tells me to jump, I will look at him and go: yeah, right, not in my jobdescription sweetheart (or something ). You probably jump :P

Does it ever bother you? Or what would happen if you didn't say you were going?

Its a rule in the regiment that if its going to take you an exstended amount of time to go anywhere you have let your boss know.

It doesnt really bother me since unless they have a reason they wont object.

What would happen to me kind of depends on the circumstances with a little bit of office politics thrown in.

Worst case is I get charged with AWOL and could spend no more than 2 years in a military prison.

Hey it's not even a little stretch, if i don't like gays i can pose the same BS like these guys in Quebec do. Smoking is legal, they have no right to say what i can or cannot do on my time.

The last place in the world any trooper wants to go is military prison.

I had a tour of it back in the day when I was in the Reserves, and it is not pleasant.

You have to earn the right to talk, eat regular meals, etc. Crazy brutal...the commander told us the amount of people who return is .5% or something like that (compared to 20%+ in civvie jails).

Isn't it time our prison system learns something from the military prison system then?

It is discriminatory and should be taken to court. What people do on their own time is their business PERIOD (just ask PET he'll tell you).

..and yet for professionals, they legally have no "their own time". Lots of teachers, cops and lawyers have faced disciplinary action for conduct away from the job and totally unrelated to the job.

VCH has a no smoking policy on all there grounds and worktimes. There is no smoking at anytime, but they do not discriminate against it, they supply nicotine replacement options and incentives to quit for employees and in-patients.

The Calgary Foothills (Tom Baker Cancer Center) has the same policy "no smoking anywhere on hospital grounds" it's a joke I have never seen so many smokers congregate in one place in my life. 5 feet from the from the front door, it's disgusting.

I can't understand why a smoker would want to apply for this job.

We cant be on grounds period...that means no where near the city block. Its a long walk to go smoke, well at least it promotes exercise :P
