They've been around throughout many people's journey from teen to adult. They sing about things only Canadians know about. I don't know if they'd be a 'national institution', but they certainly are a part of people's memories and a part of our unique culture.

Even if you aren't a fan, I'll bet you recognize many of the lyrics.

"They shot a movie once, in my hometown . . "

"My head was in the river, my feet back up on the banks. I looked up to the Lord above and said, 'Hey man, thanks!'."

They performed the soundtrack for so many Canadians' youth. Their music was the music of a generation's teenaged beer drinking parties, then college/university parties and, eventually, house parties. For me it was Max Webster that played that soundtrack. For people a few years younger than me, their Max Webster was the Tragically Hip.
