Yet they did try to do this. You don't seem upset over it. I'm curious why?

Every government tries something like this. What are you going to do about it, outside of an election year?

They didn't throw fits when Harper put out his 1000 page 'budget' that was really an omnibus bill on all sorts of creeping government boundary assassinations.

And what Trump has been doing for 3 1/2 years is a far cry from a little over reaching during a crisis.

It's only bad when Trump / Republicans do it.
When the Lefties do it, it's "vitally important for the sake of the nation",
that big daddy government is going to steal ever more money.

You mean delivering on his campaign promises? Why would that upset you?

I was going to leave this thread alone in the interest of unity then Doc showed me why the truth needs to get out there. Thanks, I guess.

The country was coming together, and partisanship was fading. Trudeau threw that in the garbage.

Quote:
Justin Trudeau and the Liberal government had a tremendous opportunity to unify the nation.

Amid the China CCP Coronavirus Crisis, Canadians were coming together, and partisanship was fading.

Many of Trudeau’s opponents were praising aspects of what he and the government were doing.

Even I had a few nice things to say.
This was a moment when Canada could have been brought together as one nation in a spirit of unity and common purpose.

But now – at the federal level – that’s been ruined by the Trudeau government.
Instead of bringing Canadians together, they tried to take advantage of our fear and the chaos caused by this crisis, by pushing for an unprecedented power grab that would have eliminated the power of Parliament and left Trudeau and their cabinet as dictators until December of 2021.

And while the government has somewhat walked it back under an immense backlash, the fact that they even tried it has had a devastating effect on the trust between the political parties, wrecking any unity and non-partisanship that was growing.

Trudeau once again has revealed his true intentions: When given a chance to unite Canadians, he sought to deviously expand his own power instead, sowing more distrust in our nation when we can least afford it.

I don't know about you but this bit below wasn't made clear to me by Justin's paid propaganda arm. Was Trudeau really...

A bit of an exaggeration I'm sure. But how much?

"We" didn't have to do anything. The people elected to represent us in the form of the Loyal Opposition did their duty. They stood firm against an egregious grab for power in the midst of a national health crisis by this minority liberal government. That the government would have been solely responsible for the bills death on the floor of the HoC had they not backed off is also self-evident.
What is really telling about this government is the fact that they fought any changes to the remaining clauses opposed by the opposition until around midnight last night before they finally bowed to the inevitable but long after they had shown Canadians where their true priorities lay - and that most certainly wasn't with us.

"Monday night Global News revealed a Liberal emergency bill granting “extraordinary new powers to spend, borrow and tax without having to get the approval of opposition MPs until December 2021.” Why? They could already spend, borrow and tax. Why should all the silly barons, clerics and commoners shut up and let King John run things his way?"

"....the first draft of the Liberal bill essentially proposed installing Justin Trudeau and Bill Morneau as co-emperors. Until Dec. 31, 2021, the Finance Minister would have had exclusive power to raise taxes, “purchase or hold a company’s shares” and extend credit without the palaver of Parliamentary approval."
