Heh, thanks. I've been trying on my "rational thinking" hat more often of late. I think it fits better than my "knee-jerk pinko dipper" hat.

I'd rep you again for making me laugh with this post but it won't let me. [B-o] I too am trying to be a little more centrist rather than "right-wing baby killer" guy!

Sapio Sapio:
Leave all Science to the private sector.

Are you prepared to enjoy life without computers, nuclear power or dozens of other important inventions?

Government supported R&D is key towards advancing technology. Companies only care about how to make a widget faster and cheaper, and don't give one fig for figuring out far more important discoveries than making widgets.

$1:
The invention, which was supported by US government funds, has already been licensed by two companies, MIT said.

But those things could have been done without government funding and most likely cheaper to us. Plus, the private sector has created way more inventions that the government has or could. Funding science is not the governments job.

You're missing the Point. Private Industry may Cure Cancer, reanimate Roadkill, Colonize Mars, yadda yadda ya, but Reality shows that they often don't do these types of things. No one should prevent Private Enterprise from working on various things, but Government Funded research has been extremely important in bringing us to where we are today. Much of our Electronics, Plastics, the Internet, and many more Techs are direct results of Government and not Private Enterprise.

Reality doesn't care for Ideological positions.

I don't see evolution and creationism as a science versus religion or even an either/or situation. My view is neither of the above.
Catastrophism and other scientific but non-evolutionary views may be closer to being accurate.

Well, first of all, to make sure we are on the same page, what is your definition of the Theory of Evolution in a very few sentences?

Mine is that everything from changes in land formation and geography through to the development of species happened gradually over thousands and millions of years.

No. Evolution doesn't include changes to the land or geography. That shows a complete lack of understanding about what evolution is.

The fact that the only degree that Darwin had was in theology doesn't seem to have held him back much either.

Or the fact that Churches established almost all the great universities in Europe, and that religious orders spawned some of the greatest thinkers(scientific and philosophical) in Western Civilization.

I think he was the chaplain for the ship as well as the naturalist, as he was an ordained minister.
