Its likely they were following procedure in order to ensure a conviction.
They know full well the public had full details but as a matter of law they are required to make that statement.
Does anybody want this scumbag getting off because the police made an error that allowed him to claim prejudice for a fair trial?
Why take that risk when they know everybody knows the details anyway?
