I have to agree with Frnak D. Legislation is not the way to address the problem of getting local products into the grocery stores. His ideas about tax incentives is a much better way. Change must be market driven, in other words, if the populace begins to demand local products then the grocery chains will eventually follow.

I heard this MLA on the radio this morning, and the man is completely wrong. If you want local food, go right ahead and buy local, there are many stores in NS that sell exclusively local produce. To make a law forcing chains to sell local food is asinine.

About as well as can be expected for coffe beans that are processed in Canada!

Since I am not aware of coffee that is grown in Canada the next best option for me to 'buy local' is to consume coffee that is processed in Canada!( Calgary)

No matter where I am, I try to support 'local trade'. I don't necessarily check to see where my intended purchase was manufactured. If it is a product I want, and the quality is evident, at a price I am willing to pay...but if a Canadian Made product of coparable quality and price is available at the time I require it, then that is my purchase.

The only draw backs I can see, other than the fact that making it a law which is completely assinine, are:

Much higher prices in a faltering economy and a lot less selection when the growing season is over and the other suppliers decide it's time for payback, since you screwed them over by passing a law that favors home grown.

If you want local go out and buy local, but passing a law that makes it mandatory to stock local will only end up hurting consumers.

New Democrat MLA John Mac-Donell was skeptical of Mr. Glavine’s call for legislation because he thought it would violate interprovincial trade agreements.

An NDP MLA said this? Really? Is he being flogged as we speak?

Why is food so overpriced in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick?
My personal experience was backed up by the Star's price comparison on healthy eating throughout Canada. The quality of vegetables in grocery chains is also lower than in the rest of the country. I would certainly agree that something is wrong with the farm/grocery distribution system.

Um...yeah how about if producers think buying local will sell they simply mark the local produce as local....oh wait.

People have a choice to buy local already in stores. It's called freedom and as I've said before I'm a big fan.
