I hope the countries where this garbage was nonsensically sent to keep doing this. Canada absolutely deserves to be embarrassed as much as possible for turning a problem we should have fixed on our own, because it was a problem we created, into someone else's mess to fix:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/we-are-go ... -1.5152274

$1:
Malaysia is denouncing Canada's "irresponsible" export of plastic waste, becoming the second Asian nation to make plans to ship Canadian trash back across the ocean.

On Tuesday, Malaysian officials opened a shipping container filled with plastic bags from major Canadian chains, as well as product packaging stamped with "Made in Canada" labels from recognizable brands.

"I think you need to take back your rubbish," Malaysian Environment Minister Yeo Bee Yin told a CBC News crew at Port Klang, a sprawling facility outside Kuala Lumpur.

Authorities did not identify which company exported the plastic from Canada. But they said it will be returned to that exporter after it was deemed to be too contaminated and of insufficient value for legitimate recyclers in Malaysia to take it in.

It's not known if the plastic in Malaysia came from a municipal recycling program, but shipping waste halfway around the world and back is not likely what Canadians think of when they drop plastic for recycling into their blue bin.

"I hope this will make Canadians angry as well," the environment minister said. "This is the irresponsible export of plastic, of waste. It's household garbage, it smells bad."

This kind of "recycling" is and always has been a scam, one sold by professionals to a gullible Canadian public desperate as usual for another "aren't we just so good!" moment to give us our daily fix of praise. Both of these things, shipping garbage around the world and our hypocritical country's desperate need for constant praise, are completely pathetic.

Good. We need to fix our problems ourselves, not ship them to someone else.

As of today the city of Calgary has spent over $300000 on holding the plastics that were supposed to have been shipped overseas in over a hundred large shipping containers because the so-called market that was supposed to take this garbage no longer exists. These containers are parked in a yard on the city limits with absolutely no time frame being given for when they'll either be shipped or sent to the landfill. The question now is if that market for recycling plastics ever existed at all, which I now completely doubt given the incessant lying the activists behind the "recycle everything!" movement keep getting caught doing. A sensible society would immediately halt this activity and properly investigate what the hell happened, and find out how badly this endeavour has gone belly-up in order not to repeat it again. This being Canada though it's far more likely that someone somewhere is burning up the phone lines desperately trying to find another destination that's either poor enough or corrupt enough (or both) to take this garbage off our hands, all so the out-of-sight-out-of-mind mentality can leave us comfortable and undisturbed in our luxurious righteousness.

This fucking country sometimes.....

Too bad that's not the policy of all the countries that keep sending their jihadis and other useless shitstains to the USA and Canada. :|

If you dig, there are lots of stories about various 'recycling' programs
worldwide that actually don't do anything.

Except take government money, of course.

The problem isn’t that recycling technology doesn’t exist. The problem is that the private market that buys the recycling from municipalities no longer finds it profitable to sort the garbage from the valuable recyclables .

Market failure to deliver a public service means government should be doing it.

And we need to produce less plastic and other waste in the first place.

Natural gas prices are so low, it's cheaper to produce new pellets than to recycle old ones.

No. Just require that a percentage of product be made with recycled plastic, like is done for paper.

Hear hear! Apples do not need to come individually packaged in plastic blisters.

And black plastic, that can't be recycled, should end entirely.

WTF makes anyone think shipping garbage to 3rd world countries has dick all to do with "recycling"?
It's a scam to cheaply deal with garbage. Like dumping shit in a park when the garbagemen are on strike.

The funny thing is, in jurisdictions where there's still a return for deposit program, they have a higher return rate than the recycling rate of places that solely go with recycling.
