Yow. Talk about a mother of all tone-deaf moments. Just shows how hard it is to stop believing in myths & outright lies, even when faced with proof in the form of innumerable graves occupied by the bones of those who paid the harshest price for those "good intentions". :(

Good on Wab Kinew for talking to him calmly and rationally about his mistake.

Considering I tone of the world right now and the fact he’s a politician I would say he failed. There are a number of people who have probably written him off just for his opening statements.

I was doing some research on a story my grandmother told me. I found out which school she went to and contacted the librarian. When I was asking about time lines she told me that kids were taken as young as two!!!! WTF!!!! 2!!!!! I’m more horrified than before also it was government policy to have a long distance between home and schools to make it harder for families to help or kids to get home on their own!

That is so sad housewife. So many childhoods destroyed by growing up not even knowing what being part of a family was even about. Most of us simply cannot fathom this.

On a side note... wouldn't it make more sense that a person assigned to the position of Indigenous Minister be someone who is Indigenous? What I mean is that even if a non-Indigenous person has all the "right" education/job experience I would think that they still would not garner complete trust and respect from those they are representing.

Brian Pallister gives a dam what the red man thinks? I'm amazed he didn't have the police arrest Wab Kinew for trying to instigate a riot. They are already saying the whole thing is a political stunt by Wab Kinew and not a spawn of his own callousness.

Political experts say Manitoba PCs will have a hard time recovering from residential school blunder

I dunno, Manitoba has a history of electing the people who will not rock the boat and tow the line least someone get upset.

The people of the times when they put radium in drinks for it's health benefits and made toys out of lead believed they were doing the right thing too.
I never used to believe the residential school system was out to intentionally destroy native cultures and treat the children like shit, but I've since learned different. As has everyone.
Education and explanation of how the world worked was necessary, but it seems it was secondary to the residential school system's primarily genocidal intents.

Actually, I think I read in another article on this subject that the new Minister is actually Metis, so he is in fact Indigenous.

And while you might think a Native Minister might be more likely to get trust and respect, I've seen comments from activists who just consider a Native Minister in the position to be an attempt to put a positive spin on the government's agenda. It's to the point where they actually prefer a non-Native person in the role.

Keep in mind that so many governments have broken so many promises over the years, and Indigenous Affairs bureaucrats can still interfere in band council decisions, and there are so many bad faith actions like infrastructure funding formulas 40 years out of date and ignoring the human rights tribunal rulings on compensating Native kids who went through a purposely underfunded child welfare system, that it's no wonder a lot of Native people won't trust an Indigenous Relations Minister even if the Minister is in fact Indigenous.
