Parties on all sides concede that the system needs to be fixed. Concerns are of course that the Tories are removing the decision-making from comittees that include non-governmental experts and instead are in effect making everything at the discretion of the Minister, as if he's a king or something. Also the idea that you can deport someone even while they have a court appeal in process seems a little heavy-handed.

Yes, they need to fix it right. Dunno about those non-governmental experts tho, I thought they were just political appointees, who never met a refugee they didn't like. And the appeals process needs to be way reduced and speeded up. And we need to keep refugees in detention until the process is completed.

While getting visa docs at the Canadian embassy in Prague 2010, each time
I went, coming in from a far-off city on the early train at opening time, there
was without fail a family or two of gypsies there. A family or two equalling 15+
children under 10 in the waiting room as the mothers waited to speak with the
officers, the men were never there.

Went to the Czech Rep in 2004, shocked at the stereotypes I had heard... after a further 6 years in Central Europe... yeah... good call on this bill. The Czech Republic is ABSOLUTELY not a state to be claiming refugee status from...

You mean just the ones under deportation order, right? Also the ngo consulatants would have only been SOME of the panel members, not all of them (note: this committee model was ser up by the Tories but has not been put into practice yet).

The problem I have with refugee claims being approved only at the personal whim at pleasure of His Worship is this becomes political. As the Cheney and Bush types go around staging coups like in Haiti and get cozy with dictatorships like Saudi, a govt like Harper's would find excuse to deny claims from ppl fleeing those regimes. Conversely, anytime a leftist party gets elected, the refufee flooodgates could open to the elites fleiing with all the money they can steal

No - all refugee claimants who arrive in this country illegally (ie not sponsored) should be detained until their claim is settled. This process should be greatly speeded up, so they won't be in dentention all that long, either welcome to Canada or buh bye. And if we were to get a lot tougher with this sort of bullshit we'd have way less refugees to deal with, so the process would be even quicker.

And once their claim is settled, any "refugee" that goes back to visit the country they "fled" before achieving citizenship here, gets to stay there, period.

Did you ever see "My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding" on TLC? It's most peculiar....the weddings are over the top; from gilded horse-drawn coaches to Hummer limos to dresses that are made of several kilometres of material. However, none of the men seem to have any visible means of support, and the women aren't allowed to work.
Money is one thing they never talk about, but how the hell do they pay for it?

First, refugees are not illegal, you can come here legally as a regugee. In fact, the government often offers to take in refugees in the wake of a war or major event such as the Rwanda genocide.

And where would you detain these refugees anyway? Break up the family and throw them into mens and womens prisons with violent criminals? Where would the children go? Whos going to pay for those facilites? And what does it say when someone whose survived torture, rape, concentration camps, refugee camps comes here and we throw them into prison simply because we assume without basis that theyre up to no good? What ever happened to judging an individual on their merits instead of their nationality?
