I do not see what the big deal is. These men have not seen the light of day for months now. They have had no communication with their families, no news, no contact with the outside world. Now instead of the normal festive homecoming that they would receive, they get tucked away for even more isolation. The world is not going to stop spinning because these sailors listen to some music while having a BBQ for an hour. I say that whoever had a problem with this BBQ is the one that should be relieved of command.
This is just more career planning from some people looking to secure a promotion, job on retirement or a better posting by following blindly a dictate from the gov't that in this case doesn't make sense.
But the real problem is one of perception. To the higher ups who are obviously more concerned about their careers than their own sailors it's a case of "What will the civilians and gov't think". Especially if the word got out about sailors having a BBQ and disco on the jetty when everyone's been ordered to isolate.
Unfortunately for for these wannabe First Sea Lords and their blind obedience to gov't dictates, civilians in isolation shouldn't be in one of Her Majesties Dockyard to observe anything in the first place and even if the word got out, who really gives a shit other than people who don't really understand what a submarine is and what environment it operates in.
These sailors have been isolated for weeks already and are about to go into a second quarantine despite no chance of contact with the virus which makes the decision to refuse this banyan ridiculous. But, on the flip side, this guy may have done the right thing but he's about to find out that arguing with your superior is like wrestling with a pig. Everybody gets dirty but, the pig loves it.
