There is a simple solution to this.

Canada should declare war on the U.S.

Then once Canada effortlessly conquers and defeats the Americans, then it should be easy to go ahead with the project.

Thanos can see through the bullshit.
You wouldn't even dream of approving the Enbridge pipe here without the environmental review being done, and it's fucking idiotic to assume the US is different.
And swallowing this Yankee Reptilian cliche that anyone with the slightest concern about the environment is a leftist shows incredible ignorance.
Poll the entire Conservative membership in BC and ask "should we allow oil tankers to use the Inside Passage" and see what the answer is.
That's why they're pretending that's not part of the Gateway plan!

Your point would stand if what you pretend was true.

All the environmental reviews were made and remade. More than remade. It's environmental and, yes, socialist filibusting, nothing more.

To Hell with the Americans! send the oil to Asia, where we'll get a fair price and no mumbling. Only don't ship it from Kitimat, send it from Prince Rupert!

I just hope it pushes us into building a pipeline to the west coast. We should be doing that, Keystone or no.

Negative. The Northern Gateway is simply a bad idea. Tankers on the North Coast transiting Douglas Channel is dumb, nothing less than dumb.

The Knee Jerk reaction is that for a whole host of reason I would rather purchase oil from Canada than from the ME. I believe it would be a good arrangement for all involved.

Yes, there are concerns but those can be dealt with, we can deal with them and do it.

Build the pipeline and sort out the problems.

Yep, close that barn door...

Years ago, when it was proposed as the Gateway project, the outlet point was supposed to be Prince Rupert. Why the change? I don't know the geography of the area very well but Prince Rupert looks like it has open access to the ocean.

No way. If nation building didn't work in Afghanistan, think of how much harder it would be with the US.

Looking at the geography, you'd be adding length to the pipeline and more importantly, you'd likely have to run it along the Skeena river to get to Prince Rupert.

Thanks, I get it now. Though I am sure Prince Rupert was the target at one point. Also, as I recall, the Federal Government was interested in developing Prince Rupert as a second Pacific port to take the pressure off Vancouver.

PR is already a developed deep sea port. It's definitely an alternative to Kitimat. But the Skeena valley is prone to avalanches - difficult terrain. I'm sure that could be overcome tho.

The other alternative that's waiting in the wings is doubling up the Kinder Morgan pipeline to Vancouver. Much less hassle to get permission and to build, since you're adding to an existing pipeline. Vancouver port would have to be upgraded, and then of course we have people in Vancouver who would't be crazy about increased tanker traffic. But as long as we use oil we also have to be willing to take some of the risks, as long as they are reasonable. And we need this sort of development. If Canada is going to put all its eggs into the selling raw materials basket, the least it can do is diversify its customer base and make selling the stuff as profitable as possible.

President Obama made a political decision, and it'll be one that will bite him hard in the election. Of course the Republicans forced his hand, his entire delay until 2013 was a weak attempt to not make it an issue in the election. He picked appeasing environmentalist groups over the actual benefits for the economy.

I don't believe he did.

The environmental assessment wasn't complete; plenty of stakeholders had unanswered questions and the amendment to a tax law bill that forced him to make a decision one way or the other in 60 days forced him to err on the side of caution and kill it.

The Republocrats screwed the pooch. They got what they wanted; a non-issue to rally around for their Presidential gongshow contestents.
