Good, it's about time.

Should have been done 10 years ago.

Damn rights it should've. I can understand someone fleeing a draft if they truly don't want to fight, but to have these people the knowingly join the military and then decide they don't want to go to war is just pathetic.

Oh Yah! Oh Yah! Even if they've done their tour several times over. I'm not sure how they cope knowing Chobin thinks they are pathetic.

I do think they are pathetic, they signed on, they are lax in their duty and commitment to something that was apparently fine with them until they were faced the reality of the situation. Cowardly is more apt a term. If they have done their tours time and again, fine, still they aren't done their service.
Can't hack it don't F^%$in join. They should go back to the days when deserters were shot, then maybe some of these people will think twice before joining up.

Like I said, it's one thing to flee a draft into a war you don't support, it's another to desert. NO respect or support here.
Also we are alies with the US, theres no way we should be taking in their deserters.

Too right. I agree with you Choban. We've discussed this topic many times and I'm glad they are sorting this out.

Thanks EyeBrock, I can't think of a good reason we allowed them here in the first place. If I'm not mistaken desertion is a crime and here we are letting them in??? Glad they closed the door.

You sign up, your ass is owned. I've known a few draft dodgers from the 70s, all people who thought they were better than soldiers. Didn't make a great impression on me.

Although the current stop loss policy, and the idiocy of the Iraq war (which is the only reason the stop loss policy is being used) is not helping the U.S. on the public relations side.

I'm taking the other side on this, at least on a somewhat limited basis.

Those who were in the reserves, National Guard, or anything before the invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq, and found the war as offensive as the rest of the planet did, should have some choice.

The same goes for those who are re-deployed repeatedly or are continuously having their tour extended.

My brother in law (A Major who is on his second tour in Afghanistan now) even sympathized with a lot of the guys in the States. He said that if Canada had gone into Iraq when the US first asked, we’d probably have a lot of people doing the same thing. Putting your life on the line for a cause you can’t get behind is one thing, but putting your life on the line on the basis of a lie is despicable.

Agreed poquas. Those that signed up after the Yanks went into Afghanistan then deserted are not needed in Canada.

Hey, just in time for when the US pulls out of Iraq and there are no more war deserters.

I think Canada should welcome anyone that was Stop Lost. They did their time and duty, the US is not sticking to their end of the deal.

Well I do agree that those who willingly join should be held accountable to that descion, I think as long as the US is kicking war veterans out just for being gay they don't have a moral high ground to complain about others wanting to leave for their own reasons.

This is a dead horse. Still, I disagree with the common sentiment. If you want to quit the military, you should be able to, just like quitting any other job. If the military wants you to repay for your training, then they should be able to send you a bill, but they should have the right to quit. It's not like these guys are walking off the battlefield and endangering their co-workers.

One of the best people I know is a guy that told Lyndon Johnson he wasn't going back to Vietnam.
