Because no one has gone to prison for anything else ever. Or at least that's what I'm told when I visit Humbolt County.

Given our propensity for following all things America this shouldn't come as a suprise.

They've had prison gangs for over half a century so it's kind of a no brainer that it would happen here eventually. Hopefully these gangs don't extend their influence outside the prison walls like the American ones.

My favourite part of this story is how the locals here think it's a big joke.

Prison gang population jumps 44% in 5 years

So.. Who's got an idea besides decreasing profits for gangs to reduce this? Or do you all not care?

Quote:
The records show a big jump in aboriginal gangs, especially in the Prairies.

Or maybe you think it's not your problem, like we all did when it was just an American phenomenon.

Prohibition encourages gangsterism.

Stop the violence. End the drug war.

More drugs, more gangs. That's what prohibition does.

I imagine if drugs were legal like you want, they still wouldn't be legal in jail. Just like booze. So now what?

Good point. Why is it that prisons can't keep the drugs out? It's prison, for Christ's sake. Surely Corrections Canada could keep drugs out if they really wanted to. How hard could it be?

Removing the profit motive to join a gang leads to fewer gang members. The people with nothing to lose have the most to gain from prohibition. Will they find something else when prohibition ends to cheat the system, maybe. But it won't be as lucrative as black market drugs, and someone will already be doing it.
