It's shameful how little you people know of this case. He served his sentence. Was it lenient? Yes, but it was agreed upon by judge, D.A. and defense. The rest is a sham. A showboat, celebrity wanna-be judge is the villain here.
He went in for a psychiatric evaluation, not for the actual criminal sentence. He fled before receiving his criminal sentence.
None of you know much about this story, it seems. You need to read up on the case. The sentence WAS the psych evaluation. It was supposed to be 90 days, that's what the judge thought. But the shrinks turned him loose before 90 was up. This pissed off the judge, who hadn't understood the process. The judge was a shameless movie-star wanna-be, so he renegged on the plea deal that had been the psych evaluation. In fact, it was the judge's OWN idea to make the sentnece the 90 days in the hatch. You should check out the film "Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired". It's a solid documentary on the case. Polanski served his sentence. The judge was a crooked fuck-up.
Regardless, Polanski is a 76 year old holocaust survivor who made a stupid (though concentual) mistake 40 years ago. If this were anyone but a celebrity, it never would have seen the inside of a courtroom in the first place.
