But the hidden internet history on her computer showed Elle, who grew up in Bootle, Merseyside, was secretly troubled by the pressures of modern life - a desire to be thinner and prettier.

But hey - as long as sex sells, who gives a shit if there are deadly consequences attached? Keep the boys drooling and forking out the dough to keep the industries afloat, and what's a couple fragile teenage lives? They're only girls and women, after all. They aren't worth anything.

Anorexia is more about self-image, not how others see you.

A psychological disorder that has probably existed for a long time, even though the term was first coined in 1873. They believe that Saint Catherine of Siena, born in 1347, was anorexic.

Those pro-ana sites though... I don't know what to say. 8O

How could she be prettier? She likely left behind a bunch of classmates who considered her unattainable. Sad.

Because she doesn't look like one of the airbrushed broads that are plastered up absolutely everywhere you turn. Thank God, in my opinion. She was a natural beauty, and more accomplished than most adults I know, yet still felt she was worthless.
Lovely society we've created.

Where do you think self image is derived? People, women especially, have been pressured for centuries to meet whatever the current standard happens to be. Just so happens we have a particularly degrading standard being set in these times and it's hugely destructive.

The pro-ana sites are just as fucked up as todays standards.

If you feel that strongly about it, maybe use your influence to stop the CKA Hotties threa. First we get everybody claiming to like zaftig chicks, yet that thread has nothing but slim chicks with big boobs, now you're complaining about how this girl's suicide is the fault of threads like that.

If outside attitudes were what drove people to suicide, guys would be committing suicide for not measuring up to the standards put on men - it does't all have to be about looks. And actually I guess they do, since more men commit suicide than women.

Time for women to quit externalizing and and have some sense of self. Same with all the pop songs by women about how some man held them down but now they're going to be strong, roar, what have you. Always some guys' fault for them not standing up for themselves. We've had years of womens lib, yet the same bullshit still goes on. Women don't seem to grow any balls until their 40's, most of them, want to be nice and liked and popular, so will twist themselves into any shape they think will accomplish that. Too bad.

$1:
"There was no long-suffering depression, or slow descent into despair. The spiral into darkness seemed to occur over just a few short hours as her mind became overwhelmed and she simply snapped.

The rest of the story puts a lie to this - this girl had been hiding her suffering for some time. Goes to show how little we really understand mental illness. It's actually a common story - somebody who seemed to have everything to live for commits suicide with no outward indication they were suffering. I think often people feel trapped in their role as the popular, happy one, and don't feel they can talk about their struggles to anybody. What we portray to the outside world, our persona, can be very different to what's going on inside.

I absolutely agree. That's exactly the type of shit that fuels this. But stop it? HA!! There was an absolute shit fest over having it monitored! Mainly by one of the "boys club" itself. If one of your admin throws the biggest fit over having it censored, there isn't a hope in hell it would be shut down.

Also true.

All true as well. Unfortunately, the main goal through those young years is impressing the opposite sex. Look at the information they're receiving.
-You have to be thin
-You have to have perfect skin, nails and hair
-You have to look like what you see on a magazine (all fake, but that's not what their little minds see)

And largely fueled by what men/boys "want". It's bad enough with the teens, but those twisted mentalities don't ever seem to go away. As you said - look at the hottie thread. Fathers and grandfathers posting pics and [drool] [drool] over them. Rating women on their "tits and ass". I wonder how they'd feel if their daughters or granddaughters were the subject of the drooling by the dirty old pigs. If their own daughters/granddaughters entire value was being rated by their "tits and ass". (Sadly, it would probably go right over their heads)

I decided a long time ago that if I wasn't good enough "as is", whoever was doing the judging could go screw themselves. Unfortunately, most women don't see things that way. As long as men remain pigs (as the saying goes), and keep viewing women as nothing more than personal entertainment, this problem will continue to escalate.

The other problem is parents don't parent anymore! Not only do they not have a clue what the hell their kids are doing, they don't teach them that aforementioned self worth. To have pride in themselves. Girls show some class instead of their tits. Boys show some respect instead of flashing the selfies of their dicks for a date. That would make a huge difference as well.

I don't totally disagree with you, but men and women are both "pigs" in their own way. Both sexes have their biological drives, and both sexes objectify they other in their own way. For women, it's more about men being "success objects" more so than sex objects. I was in a relationship where I realized my role was to be sperm donor/financial baby support system for a woman who was hearing her clock ticking. Felt just as objectified as many women do.

Women usually need more emotional involvement with their sexual partner than men do. I don't know if that makes us pigs or just the way we're built. I think we converge as we grow older (some of us, anyway) where men start wanting more than just getting laid, and women seem more interested in just getting laid.

I don't think women are all about impressing the opposite sex. It's more about competing with each other for status, part of that is catching a high status male, and to do that they have to meet male standards of attractiveness.

I plead that men are helplessly trapped in their biology. We are hardwired to get turned on by this shape, our brain lights up when we see it: Image

But yes, the media contributes by continually putting out images of beauty, so that real women might seem less somehow. And don't get me started on porn and how it distorts sexual expectations, especially among kids. Thankfully most people seem to find there way thru these minefields and still connect in one fashion or another, tho I hate to think of how all that looks for the millennials.
