Yeah, we don't have internet police checking this place out - let's hope. But we have hate speech laws

Yeah...I don't think they'll be bringing back blasphemy laws under the cover of anything in whatever that is.

However...here's something you might like.

Technically Canada does have blasphemy laws. We've had them since 1892. The last time they ever made it to trial was 1927.

This English satirist was saying stuff like God preferred roast cutlets and the idiots of the day gave him 60 days in the slammer and sent him back to England.

Some clown tried to use the law again when Monty Python's life of Brian came out, but things had changed by then. The powers that be buried that one.

Technically though, the law is still on the books.

Actually it might be fun if somebody like Abu Isra tried to use it again. I'd buy popcorn.

In a secular state anti-blasphemy laws can't even exist. There is by default no state religion so therefore the state can't outlaw free speech attacks on religion. Charlie Hebdo proved that this is the legal state of affairs in France. Bill Maher kind of proves it too in the US. Both of them aren't blaspheming because they're attacking all religions equally, and what they're doing certainly isn't incitement to violence.

My suspicion is that Muslims live in such an angry culture that they're just not mentally capable of understanding or processing satire. Allah and Mohammed saturate their entire lives to such an extent that they see satire as no different than setting a mosque on fire. There's plenty of observant Jews and Christians that probably hate the likes of Hebdo or Maher but their own religious intensity doesn't match that of the Muslims so they basically can't conceive of trying to kill satirists over any alleged insults. Push the clock back 500 years and there'd be lots of Christians who would have burnt the cartoonists and comedians at the stake. Thanks to the secular thinking that came out of the Enlightenment those kind of Christians are now so few in number that they're not a significant factor any more in these kinds of discussions. Like has been said often over the last 14 years, the Muslims are still about 500 years behind in their thinking and just can't comprehend the hows and whys of a secular society.
