"The irony of all this is that none of these examples involve any actual change in the underlying U. S. policy. It is simply that, with the United States having elected a charismatic and ground-breaking Democrat, the optics have changed. In clearing a path for Mr. Harper, Mr. Obama thus throws a light on the shallowness and hypocrisy that typify Canadian attitudes to the United States."

this is the funny part...nothing has changed from the US and Harper but the complaining has subsided, at least for now. The Liberals will have to find a new line of attack come election time .Bush lover won't cut it, and since Harper and Obama are on the same page what ever will they complain about?

And there will be no more derisive remarks about Ottawa's "U. S.-style" policies when Mr. Obama and Mr. Harper both adopt a tough stance on Hamas and Hezbollah, or Israel's right to defend itself.

Wrong. This means that if the policy is bad and people complain about it, the president will actually listen instead of just doing whatever his cronies want him to do.

I don't think of the "anti-Americanism" was so much anti-America as it was Anti-Bush. Bush was a moron and gave up quite a bad name abroad ( although we elected him twice. The first time was a stupidity the second was a knee jerk reaction to 9/11). Now that we have a President with some intelligence hopefully we can solve some of the common problems between our nations. There are a number of problems
to solve and we may not agree on everything, but there are a host of things we can do to improve each others life.

I hope we can start with the discontinuation passport requirement to cross the border. It's an unnecessary pain in the arse for millions of tourist or more correctly our friends crossing one side or the other.

I don't think it's anti-Bush but anti-Republican and that shows a dangerous misunderstanding of the US system. Just because some like to think that Democrats are somehow left of center dosen't make them anything like our Liberals or NDP.
