I've worked a few crap jobs, but if I worked at a place where my co-workers were going out into dangerous situations, and sometimes not coming back, and I felt I could do something to stop that, I imagine that might be worse than actually being out there with the gun. Few feelings are worse than helplessness.
Edit: I didn't get that far in the article the first time I looked at it but yeah, that's pretty much it:
