Quote:
Since coming to power in early 2006, Harper has now named 46 Conservative senators, including renaming several failed Tory federal election candidates.

He reappointed Fabian Manning and Larry Smith to the red chamber in May after they resigned and failed to win a seat in the House of Commons in last Mays federal election. Former Conservative cabinet minister Josee Verner was also appointed after voters punted her from the Commons.

We've come a long way from the promise to not appoint any senator that wasn't given a mandate from the people, to appointing senators whose mandate was rejected by the people.

And made no progress by leaving the only way to make the senate elected in the hands of the senate.

Curtman has too much time on his hands. This is old and irrelevant news.

If we legalize pot, the senate will become an elected body.

Really, the Senate is just a vestige of the original Legislative Council vs Legislative Assembly, as in appointed bodies over ruling elected ones.

Maybe the best thing would be just to abolish the Sentate and go with the elected House of Commons.

Even if we get a triple-E senate, do we need it? Shouldn't parliaments' decisions stand without 'sober second thought', elected or not?

Seems like jobs for the boys/girls either way.

One elected assembly is enough.

That or we need a House of Lords.

I appoint myself the Viscount of Victoria.
