$1:
"Those dreams of staying in Canada are all gone," said Marco Lucinao with Migrante Alberta, a group that works with temporary foreign workers.

Lucinao's group has been trying to keep temporary workers informed about their rights, including health-care options if they decide to stay illegally.

Making such a statement in the media, him and his group should be arrested immediately.

Should they want to stay and gain PR and citizenship there is a process that they have to follow. Pretty sure there are plenty of employers who would like to retain some of these workers, and having a job offer would help the process....staying illegally should be an automatic disqualifier though.

CBC has switched from exposing the TFW scam to wailing about the human cost to these poor "immigrants." Most of them weren't working at temp jobs. If we really need these workers, bring them in under the regular immigration program - properly, so they can't be exploited by employers. But temporary should mean temporary - do seasonal work then go back home - no staying in Canada for years.

One woman was crying because she sent all her money to her family back in Phillipines, didn't have the airfare to go home. Might I suggest her family send her some money back?

We know how the Gastarbeiter program worked (didn't) in Germany, don't need to repeat that mistake.

In Taiwan, those TFW(Filipinos, Thais and Indonesians mostly) who worked in manufacturing were usually kept in dormitories close to the plants they worked in. You heard about runaways all the time and you occasionally saw the FA Police nab a few on the street. There were plenty of horror stories about the way some were treated. OS Chinese from those same areas had no problem getting in and were treated completely different.

Just to be contrarian I don't see the purpose in fast-track deporting some harmless Filipinos that ended up being fast food staffers or nannies or whatever. This is going after low-hanging fruit instead of concentrating on immigrants that commit crimes and then disappear into their ethnic community's undergrounds. The rabid reaction to the TFW program was wildly out of scale to the misdeeds by certain employers who broke the law. More often than not the bad employers were entirely abusive to the TFW's they were bringing over, to the point of treating them like slaves, so it wasn't anywhere near a case of TFW's pulling some sort of scam themselves and living like kings off of Canadian welfare.

Those jobs these TFW's were doing are still going to go unstaffed by native-born Canadians. The majority of businesses were using these people honestly and fairly and will suffer from losing them. This whole over-reaction to the illegal acts of a tiny minority of employers was completely ridiculous.

How about we don't bring in any TFW's, and allow business to raise wages and improve training for Canadians, the re-assess after 5 years if it's really true that the can't find Canadians to to full-time permanent jobs if they pay decent wages and take the time to train them.

Agreed, the workers weren't in 'temporary' positions, they were supposed to fill positions temporally until locals could be found to fill the positions.

If we need more workers, let them stay! It there are just here as cheap labour, so sorry. Thanks for your help, now go work that hard back where you came from. Hope to see you again!

Plus members of the federal Liberals and NDP usually showing up to help them as well, with a CBC camera crew in tow as well. Goddammit, Canada! How did you let yourself get like this?

The slightly funny part is most Canadians have no idea how much worse it can / will get, the more the doors stay wide open.

Going to be a lot of seniors who are living in private care facilities, having to sit in soiled diapers for most of their day.

Lots of Canadians train for a HCA career, not having a clue what the job entails. But that first time they have to clean up the old fella who shit himself 6 hours before and now it's worked it's way past his knees and halfway up his back......all I can say is.

Seniors would be f**ked if it weren't for the TFW'S.

Au contraire! My Girlfriend runs an extended care facility, and the TFWs are the ones least likely to help grandpa into the commode in order to do his business in the first place, let alone wipe it up when he can't hold it any longer.

They are the ones who will administer stool hardeners and laxatives so that bowel movements are timed in the proper rhythm. ie: not on their shift.

In short, they are there to get paid, not to actually give a damn about the residents.
