If you drive without your hands on the wheels, accidents are bound to happen. That guy had a lot of youtube videos of him doing just that.

Sounds more like he needed to have his foot on the brake. The system stops the car if your hands aren't on the wheel.

What exactly is the point of this autopilot if you still have to be ready to take over at any time? You will just lose attention as the system does the driving for you and not be ready when you are needed to intervene.

Cruise control is great, but relying on a car to steer and brake is just nuts until all the bugs have been worked out, where you can sit in the back seat and be driven. Doubtless those systems will make mistakes, but then so do human drivers.

Approx 33,000 vehicle related fatalities per year, in the US.

Unknown at this time.

I think we would prefer accidents per km's driven (or miles driven) though. As that is much more accurate.

I know many people with cars, that rarely ever drive. I also know a couple of Tesla owners (don't think they have auto as they purchased pre 2014), and they don't really drive them much either. That would add a lot of 'cars' to each number, but not a lot of accidents, because parked cars don't hit much.

If we go by Tesla's numbers, they have logged over 47 million miles with autopilot. If that number is correct, we get approx 2 fatalities / 100 million miles (theoretical).

If we accept IIHS numbers for the remainder of the vehicles, they show a rate of 1.08 fatalities / 100 million miles.

In that sense, the autopilot is currently twice as deadly as a human.
