Gord Keith, Leduc Minor Hockey's referee assignor and a veteran official, calls hurling abuse on referees, even the beginners presiding over pint-sized players, "standard procedure in the game of hockey."

It's not the kids who are the 'juveniles' here!

The 'lure and hype' of the game has always escaped me. No one has yet been able to explain why fighting and abuse is critical to the sport!
Should be that if a player starts or continues to fight they are done for the season. If a parent or spectator becomes abusive then they are tossed out on their ass for the rest of the season.

And that is what it all comes down to...

And who is going to take the kid there in the first place? Or would you toss the kid out too? :?

Well, abuse and violence are part and parcel of the hockey culture. Which is a big reason why I don't follow it all that much.

The 'parent' can drive the kid to the hockey game and then 'sit and wait' in the car, or the kid can catch a ride with 'a responsible adult'!

This is so easy to explain, the parents are all muslim, which is, according to some members of the forum, typical muslim behaviour.

They should suspend the team for 4 or 5 games for that bullshit and have the coach explain to his players and parents why they can't play.

The league also needs to step in now and make sure this never happens again. Anything from banning the actual lunatics from seeing their kid play right up to and including banning all parents from watching their kid play for the rest of the year, including playoffs. Yes some refs can be real dick heads but that usually comes after many, many years of putting up with looney parents and players. In this case he may have made some mistakes or bad calls but look at his age. Who could blame the kid if he never ever wanted to go back and do that. In my city they're always looking for young refs to enter into their system. My nephew who last year played in the OHL has been asked many times if he would consider reffing and won't because of the loonies. Since most of his hockey fights ended when he gave them concussions he figures the loonies have already got enough brain damage.

I played hockey at a high level and I've been a level 3 referee for nearly 20 years and I've never seen anything remotely like this. Sensationalizing the rare wacko-stories shouldn't take away from what minor hockey is, for the most part: a wonderful game of shared respect between players, coaches, parents and officials.
