Travis County seeks hard data to judge success of jail diversion program

https://www.statesman.com/news/20190815 ... on-program

This is something some of us were talking about in a couple other threads. One way of getting treatment for mental health issues. As the article points out there is questions about its effectiveness. Some of which will be answered on next Tuesday's meetings.

It's a step, one of many needed, but it is in the right direction. IMO

At least they are considering that mental health might be a factor. It's a start!

Not just that but that jail is not the best place for those with mental issues to be. It's limited treatment and not set up to aid or improve their condition.

Seems to me though that the whole US prison system is intended that way. Go in, do your time, get out. Punishment with no focus on what happens when they get released.

They can't get a job, or social assistance because they have a record, so the only destination for them seems to be back to jail; one way or another.

Agreed, the justice system seems to swing back and forth from punishment to treatment/assistance to function within society.
