I don't like the term. I think it does not fit the crime.

Eight years.

That means he'll be out in under four years and when he gets out he'll get all sorts of assistance to get him back to work and he won't get deported.

Dunno if I agree. Yes, he killed a lot of people. But, really all he did was run a stop sign.

I think that the fact that he owned up to it and didn't fight it might have had an influence on his term.

Seems like he did the honourable thing by pleading out and accepting the sentence without objection, because he basically didn't want to put the families through the extra trauma of a trial. Such a horrible mistake.

Just another bloody joke from the legal system.

Life of a victim is worth absolutely SFA.

The guy was not drunk or on drugs. He mad a mistake that lead to horrible results. No malice or ill intent on what he did. Along with not running away, fessing up, pleading guilty from the start. Yeah maybe a bit longer sentence like 10yrs might have been more palatable to take yet this guy was not out to kill or harm anyone when the ACCIDENT happened.

The word Accident implies an incident where is a lack blameworthiness, him getting 8 years shows he was indeed culpable of a criminal act. He's been an adult and owned this, but he still snuffed out or irrevocably changed the lives of 29 people and families.

Am I saying he INTENTIONALLY did it, no I am not. I merely am saying his actions (or inaction) caused this, its not an accident.

This pretty much sums it up.

In Canada, without specific criminal intent, you are almost never going to see maximum sentences applied.

For this specific case, the only thing I am a bit shocked about is that the prosecution didn't even request the maximum sentence. They requested 10 years. Based it on that, it appears the judge gave the prosecution what they asked for, while accounting for mitigating factors (admission of guilt/showing remorse/etc).

2nd definition of accident according to Webster.

1a : an unforeseen and unplanned event or circumstance
Their meeting was an accident.
b : lack of intention or necessity : CHANCE
They met by accident rather than by design.
2a : an unfortunate event resulting especially from carelessness or ignorance
was involved in a traffic accident

This incident is exactly what #2 states.

Our justice system had (again!) a chance to send a message, and put this piece of garbage away for a long time. Eight years is a joke. The very same justice system choked yet again. So many lives lost, ruined, torn apart, and damaged beyond repair.

A very sad day indeed.

Only he wasn't paying attention to the road, it's an accident if he made every reasonable effort to circumvent this situation from happening. His eyes were not where they were supposed to be, he had the time and space to safely bring his vehicle to a stop, he did not, and he failed to obey the traffic control devices that were present.

They're moving away from calling collisions "accidents". They're called Motor Vehicle Collisions.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12224806

Human error negates the "accident".
