The Edmonton Zoo sucks, and probably shouldn't have as many large animals as it does (consolidate the space of the Elephant and Tiger exhibits and give all the room to one of them for example). But this:

Well I do actually go there, and have an annual pass. It's a pretty good place to take a toddler for an hour or so. It's just an anachronism at this point. It needs to be modernized.

I don't think the zoo is a dump, but simply quite dated, as it was built in the late 50s, and for the longest time was called 'Storyland Valley Zoo'. It still contains all sorts of cheesy statues and themes from that time period. I used to go a lot as a kid, but only visit every few years nowadays, as they don't add animals very often.

What it needs is expansion and an update.

I do know however, Elephants are social animals who need contact with other elephants.

That being said, if this Elephant is a sick as the zoo claims, traveling isn't an option. I would hope the vets have the animals interest at heart in all their decisions and recommendations.

as an aside and off topic, I LOVE the Calgary zoo, I think it is one of the best zoo's I have been to.

The Calgary Zoo is probably the best zoo in Western Canada. I've been to better ones, but those were world class zoos in Asia and the USA.
