could it be because merely mentioning race (particularly for the white majority) can lead to radical action from any number of fringe sources resulting in lawsuits and civil persecution...? look at the row currently in the news regarding the political cartoon and Al Sharpton...

I assume that is what he is getting at.

A nation of cowards? Didn't the American elect a black President?

So? That is kind of like when a really repressed homosexual marries a heterosexual. Hiding it as it were. I'm not saying that is the case with Obama, but hey.

I can sympathize with the idea of giving a talking to to make us toughen up, but in my opinion, it came off as rather patronizing. Perhaps he should spend his time in more useful pursuits.

try speaking out against him to his ObaManiacs without someone levelling arguments of racial motives at you... particularly after you've used intelligent arguments for counterpoints :D

What does that even mean? You can't have a calm, rational discussion about race like it was a discussion about what time it is. Emotions and red herrings always surface whenever race relations pops up in conversation. I would rather have my back waxed with hot candle wax.

You can't have a calm, rational discussion about race because we've brought ourselves into such a state of political correctness that we are collectively terrified to say something that could potentially cause a rift. Unfortunately, by bottling up the emotions and opinions (founded/unfounded stereotypes) about race and race relations, we refuse to acknowledge that there is a larger and more divisive society.

It's pretty cowardly in and of itself to call your fellow countrymen "cowards" like this. The US just elected its first black President and Holder himself is the first black Attorney General. The last two SOS before Hillary were black. Etc. No, things aren't perfect. But there seems to be more and more integration and improvement in race relations every year.

If Holder's right about this, is Canada a nation of cowards vis a vis aboriginals?

I think what he is trying to say is that given the history of the US starting with slavery, paying the chinese pennies on the dollar for labour, and deporting mexicans, cubans, and other non-white folk that some serious discussion must take place in order to heal as a nation and move forward to build a stronger future.

Now calling people cowards is not the correct way to go about this.....if he lasts a year being this opinionated I would be surprised

A nice ballsy comment by the guy. Pretty refreshing stuff for a politician, especially an American one.
