That's why we say it...

Sensitivity, yet another fault of their kind. I watched a mini marathon of that Office show. :?

Awkwardly painful.

A brave man dies only once but a coward dies a thousand deaths, or something to that effect. I'll break ranks with the general consensus here and say that I feel kind of sorry for the people in this position. I don't apporove their deserting and abandoning their comrades, and I sure don't want them to stay in Canada or not be punished (the 18 to 24 months lock-up in the stockade seems adequate to me), but the shame of their actions and the silent condemnation from community, family, and friends is going to stick with these guys for the rest of their lives. These aren't the draft-dodgers of the Vietnam era who could at least argue that they were unjustifiably being forced into military service by the government. These are volunteers who found out the hard way that they didn't have what it takes and that they should hae read the fine print on the contract before they signed it.

Call me a soft touch but going to Iraq or Afghanistan and toughing it out until their rotations were over would have been easier than what most of them are going to experience for the rest of their time on earth. In a society that rightly values military service it's not going to be easy for anyone who did the worst thing that they could except for turning full-blown traitor and joining the enemy.

I bet lots of them are patted on the back and being told: good for you for standing up for yourself! Takes a lot of guts to do so, hunni!
