I saw this on the news tonight. Heart-warming to hear a positive story from Vancouver's DTES where you mostly only hear the negative stories.

Curious to know if he would have received similar treatment in a more affluent neighborhood or just avoided with disdain?

He might not have had as many people reaching out to him, but I certainly see people in more affluent areas being helpful with the disabled too.

This is one reason why people on he outs gravitate to the DTES, because it does have a supportive community. Just that it also has a lot of scum who will do anything to get money for drugs. We spend $1,000,000 a day on the area, with little success, because we have so many competing agencies, many of which are totally ineffective, with no overarching co-ordination. Which is why the govt should step in, hire the people from agencies that are showing success, and run the whole show from the government, instead of just shoveling money at the problem. Set up one govt agency that runs the whole thing. Hire some of the people who really know the area to run the program, ie rather than govt beurocrats, but set govt bean counters in place to handle the money. People who are good at helping people are usually not good with money.
