His time with the Coyotes wasn't all that good so the Laffs should really think twice before assuming that 99's got some kind of magic wand hidden away somewhere that would fix all their problems. He was the greatest player of all time but he certainly wasn't a very good GM, president, or coach with Phoenix. That should be more important to MLSE right now than assuming what happened with Gretzky thirty years ago will translate into front-office success today.

That's been the Leafs' problem for I don't how long now. Looking for players, coaches or whoever else won a Stanley Cup for some other team instead of looking for local talent who grew up as Leafs fans and would give their right arm to play for them.

Probably the worst part of Harold Ballard's legacy was that he pretty much destroyed the loyalty former Leaf players had to the club. Montreal seems to have an endless amount of former players that want to coach or GM for the Habs. The Leafs though seem to have no choice but to go outside. That toxic wasteland Ballard left behind him (let's face it, the rotten old fucker was a genuinely evil person) only guaranteed though that anyone who played under him wanted out of the Leafs system as fast as they could. He's been gone for over 20 years now but that generation of former players the Leafs could have used in the front office after they retired from the ice was effectively and entirely wasted. :|

No doubt. Even after getting a brand spanking new arena to play in, it seems like Ballard's ghost is still haunting the shit out that team.

And spite of what I said about getting local talent, they did pick up someone who wanted to play for them and only them. All I can say is I hope Komarov's hockey mind-set rubs off on the rest of the team.
