The farmers seem to have these DP's on the run, rumour has it they will put this on hold as early as tomorrow. They were in such a dither this morning that they mentioned the ever popular, "Well it was the PC's that started this Bill" we just want to clean it up, reasoning.

Next protest is in Red Deer tomorrow, they had to move the meeting to a larger venue, organizers are anticipating a good size turn out and have asked everyone to show up 2 hours early with what ever farm implement they choose to show up with. This might become a gong show with the QE 2 only about 200m away from this place.

Alberta is the only province in the country in which farms do not have to report to the workmen's compensation board. This is largely due to the fact that the Conservatives have let big business run a muck for the last 40 years. It created an environment where huge farms can pay a very good price for cheap undocumented labour and avoid paying for things like benefits and offering all the cool things that legal employees are entitled too, like employee rights and safety standards.

It also created one of the most dangerous work environments in the country and provides a venue for black market labour to avoid paying taxes. As usual, if conservatives are opposing it, it probably means they are losing cheap labour. Hopefully the NDP can set some of this mess straight.

Don't kid yourself that this is about family farms, why would a family object to paying compensation for 5 or 10 of their family members ? This is about big business losing their serfs and having to do things the right way.

Alberta also has no child labour standards.

Hmm, a government that wants to make children safer. We cannot possibly stand for that! Every 10 year old should have the right to drive a forklift, flip it and be killed in the process.

You mean you don't want illegal aliens from Mexico and Central America taking jobs away from Canadians by illegally undercutting mandatory wage and benefit laws?

You're obviously one of those red necked racists from Arizona.

You obviously didn't understand the facts.

The way the NDP is doing this will kill the family farm as we know it.

How to put as many farms as possible out of business by forcing them to implement a corporate level safety program and ISO 9000 system? Sounds like something some bureaucrat thought up while he was rubbing one out. :|

"Recently" is a misnomer here. This has happened for decades. It's a very common workplace accident in farming.
