WHO is China's bitch.

And the United Nations doesn't recognize Taiwan. I didn't know that.

Taïwan is a problem for everybody. Many decades ago, the US downgraded its status in favour of the PRC. Nearly all countries subscribe to the One China policy now. That’s just how the world is.

To all who want to scrap WHO, what’s your alternative?

Alternative to what?

Has WHO done something right at some point in the past that illustrates a need for them? I'm not trying to be smart ass. I genuinely want to know.

They weren't any help with the Coronavirus. I know if I was Taiwanese I wouldn't see any point in keeping them around.

I think the WHO has a leadership role, and given the general lack of US leadership on international health issues (although Ebola response was an exception), I think they fill a gap.

Given that the Taiwanese aren't part of the UN, they don't pay into it or WHO, so what does their opinion matter?

Don't get me wrong, I far prefer Taiwan to mainland China, but in this instance, Taiwan's opinion on the WHO is kind of irrelevant, just like China's opinion on NATO is irrelevant.

Well, if we're not gonna scrap it, then leave the ideological crap out of it, including those who fund it.

Prime example. When BC bud first came on the scene there was all kinds of big write-ups about how potent it was and blah blah bah. The fear-mongering got so bad the WHO sent their top drug and addiction research specialist to study the issue. His finding was; the only real health concern with pot was the actual act of smoking it. In his opinion, the stronger the weed, the less you'll smoke. The less you smoke, the lower the risk of smoking related damage to your lungs. His conclusion wasn't quite that glib but I don't remember the long-winded version of it so I just reiterated the gist of it.

He was promptly fired from his position at the WHO. Ostensibly because that wasn't the result that the Dubya administration was expecting. Keeping in mind that at that time, the US was the largest financial contributor to the WHO.

And yet..."Taiwan is seen as one of the few places in the world which has successfully stemmed the spread of the coronavirus without resorting to draconian measures."

But their opinion doesn't matter? I'd be more likely to say maybe we should do something more like what they're doing.

Not in the UN, you say. Hmmm...

So why are you blaming WHO for the ideological influence of the United States? [huh]

So did Singapore and South Korea, both of whom are a part of WHO and the UN.

Having said that, I'd be completely fine with Taiwan in the UN, either as an independent country or some other entity. The problem is that if Taiwan declares independence, it'll start a major war, and nobody on that island wants a conflict (knowing their island will be the battleground). I know it'll never happen, but I'd fully support Canada recognizing them if they ever do declare independence (even if it meant China recognizing Quebec).

I think how mainland China has screwed Taiwan internationally over the past four or so decades is a damned travesty.
