First off, I would like to apologize for posting in English. Other than a few phrases reserved for travelling in Quebec, my French is pretty much non-existent.
I think the separatists are missing something extremely important. The potential for separation to further break up the province.
The precedent is already in place as soon as there is 50.1% vote in favour of separation. What's to stop the various Native groups currently in Quebec from wanting to separate from Quebec, taking all that land with them? They could easily prompt the UN to back them in their bid, just as the separatists did.
I see the separatists as similar to racehorses in a race. They have blinders on and are focused only on one goal whilst being oblivious to what's happening around them.
This was seen in a post where someone mentioned all the money that went to the Atlantic provinces. I guess the fact that the rest of the country and the government helped to destroy the fishing industry on the East Coast is their fault?
And of course, not one person in Quebec eats cod right?

I seem to recall a previous PC PM from Quebec that decided the bulk of Canada's pharmaceutical industry would be relocated to Quebec. I didn't hear anything out of Quebec about how unfair it was to the cities and people that lost those jobs.
And this is something else that makes me wonder if the separatists have much contact with reality. I've heard many people on this forum and others, from Quebec, refer to Quebec as a have not province. How do the separatists plan on ensuring it just doesn't wind up being a have not country?
Quebec is a beautiful province with a rich history and cultural heritage. Instead of all the acrimony, why not spend money encouraging people to come and VISIT your beautiful province? Everyone talks about Montreal or Toronto or Vancouver when they visit Canada, but Quebec City is the crown jewel in Canada and most people, visitors OR citizens, have no idea.
I've always told my friends that "heard horror stories" about someone they knew that visited Quebec, that if you go there with the attitude "I speak English dammit and they better too", yer gonna have a problen. But if you at least make an attempt to speak the language, Quebec is actually quite friendly.
Unfortunately, what I see coming from the hard-core separatists is little more than racism veiled as "protection/preservation of the cultural identity".
Hitler believed in that too. And the draconian language laws ain't helping your image much either.
By all means, embrace your culture. Let's face it, French-Canadian culture is really the only culture that Canada had as a nation, but how 'bout making it easier for the rest of Canada to enjoy it AND the amazing architecture found in the province?
I'd really be curious to see the rate of non-French Canadians that have visited Quebec for vacation over the last 30 years, if it has gone down, up, or stayed roughly the same.
Anyway, sorry for the Anglo rant. I love Quebec..the separatists, not so much.
