Dude! Sweet!

I just finished my morning moderation, I here it is! I didn't even see it.

It's really too bad that it's come to this. But it was getting abused heavily. Do you see now Don? What's the difference if I know which Anon was posting, or if everyone knew that 'Don Quixote' was posting.

Perhaps we'll still find out.

Seems to me you have used a nuclear bomb to swat a fly.

The only thing you have to fear is fear itself.

I think it's great that that's been disabled. Good job. It was obviously only one person doing it.. always using aboot and VanHoover... And I'm sure he'll just come up with a smart-ass alias now, but at least we'll know it's the same person and not have to read whatever crap they write. It's unfortunate that on a site designed for discussion to better our country some feel it would be a good place to spread hatred. I think it's just so childish to actually want to piss people off... hopefully this will tone that down somewhat and we can get back to having real debates and discussions about things that matter.

As I said, I hope to open things up somewhat in future; but to do that takes some time and effort, which are always at a premium. None of the moderators are especially happy to be closing the site off to some people, but we are offering this service for free, and we don't like having to read hundreds of troll posts a day.

A nice side effect is that the server will no longer be quite so hammered, and should save me some money for bandwidth each month. It's as good a time as any to mention that your donations keep me from paying that $30/month bandwidth bill out of my own pocket, so if you support vive and would like to see it continue to improve, you might consider making a small donation. Thank you. :)

I applaud this decision. I have not been willing to get involved in many of the debates on this website because of how quickly they get derailed by trolls. I think this is an important and worthy step in the right direction. Yes, it is not ideal -- but neither are locks on your doors, unemployment insurance, or police officers. Not everybody in the world is 'good'.

I've actually had the thought before that somebody who was deeply opposed to the kind of work that vive could undertake would be well advised to destroy the site before it has an impact. One easy would to destroy would be to spoil it by troll-like subterfuge. My next thought was that if I had had this thought, than without doubt somebody deeply opposed has already had it earlier. Which leads to the next thought that catering to the trolls anger fulfills their duplicitous goals. It's kind of like the brain in a vat theory, only in this case it's a "trolls under contract" scenario. I'm not sure which one is creepier!

I'm glad to see that the moderators have made this step.

Thanks,
G

They still can, but they need a different email address for each, and it is much easier to find the culprit. This is true for any website, not just vive.

I was completely put off from visiting this site despite the nice site design and the fact that this site actually relates to Canadian news. I can't say how frustrated I was with the anony postings here: it made no sense for so many reasons. Other major (and successfuly) forums also require people to log in to post, so I was totally confused as to why vive's owners would want to have anon posts.

God knows even with registered users picking out trolls is necessary, but at least now this board won't look like a site for bored highschool pranksters to write oscenities in.

<<None of the moderators are especially happy to be closing the site off to some people, but we are offering this service for free>>

You haven't closed off the site to anyone. Everyone is free to read. Those who want to do more than that can join and do so.

It's simply a matter of deciding whether 'anon' provides more benefit to the site than detriment.

As I've said before, it would be one thing if Vive was simply a discussion forum with no purpose other than allowing folks to visit and blow off steam.

However, it isn't and allowing the site to be filled with swearing, name-calling and other nonsense, whether from 'anon' or members, isn't going to encourage visitors to take the site or its purpose seriously.

There are plenty of web venues available for people who enjoy an atmoshere filled with venomous diatribes and obnoxious behaviour. Vive doesn't need to be one of them, for either 'anon' or members.

I agree and think it is a good thing anonymous posting is disabled as too many "anonymous posters" were just flaming and inciting and not adding anything useful. Not all anonymous posters were like that, but too many of them wrecked it for the ones who behaved.
