According to Wizard (a comics.anime.fantasy.scifi magazine) X2 (X-Men united) is the greatest they've seen (they did a top 50 all time)
I'd agree with them for the most part its one of my favourite movies. Matix one wasnt bad but the horrendousness of its sequels got me to think twice about suggesting it.

Being a Babylon 5 fan, I'd say any of the B5 movies, though I wasn't a big fan of Third Space.

I don't know if it qualifies as a SCi FI. But I must say that Predator was one of my favorites.

2001 A Space Odessy
Matrix (original only)
There are some early movies from the 50's and 60's that although the special effects were no wher near what we have today, the imagination and ideas make them good movies to enjoy today still

Not such an easy question. A truly fine sci-fi film should mix special effects (as good as they can be) with a good plot, solid acting and should ultimately produce a fear and anticipation of the unknown in the audience.
I have my favourites...Blade Runner, first Star Wars, 2001 - A Space Odessey, Silent Running (70's Bruce Dern flick)...HOWEVER, I think the one film that combines all the required elements would have to be War of the Worlds. For it's time, it was state of the art, acted well and had a truly terrifying and feasible plot.

My favourites are, Star Wars, Mostly Episode I, V and VI, Independence Day, Blade I & II (Although, I guess they could be considered fantasy since they're Vampires.) Alien Series, Terminator Series (Prefer #2) and yea.... can't think if any more at the moment...
