While it would seem impossible in one way for the CDC to lose to zombies, but it is entirely possible. Especially when you look at the different ways one can turn into a zombie, the spread of infection, how quick you turn into a zombie, the panic and hysteria, the relentlesness of the zombies, their sheer numbers, contaminated food and water supplies, etc.

My son and I are impatiently awaiting the return of season 2 in February. Great show. Sunday nights just are not the same since the mid season finale.

Of course it is possible to lose ground to a disease. Even in the modern era we're still fighting the plagues of antiquity such as cholera, plague, rabies, and etc. That some horrificly infectuous and incurable disease could pop up is not beyond imagination.
The dead rising and hungering after living flesh? Yeah, that's utterly impossible because the cells of a dead body would have to function the same as when they're alive so, ergo, the person would not be dead at all. An actual corpse could not walk around for the simple reason that it was dead.
But it makes for awesome TV!

All those people long dead lurching around in the Atlanta heat, and the flesh is not falling off them, they're not covered with feeding crows and not harried by starving dogs. Literary license. It's like how the US military can plant a Tomahawk in Saddam's shirt pocket but can't ever hit a monster the size of the Empire State building with a division of tanks and a squadron of F16s all shooting at once. Or a humane shelter in San Francisco caring for more fucking monkeys than they have in Africa. Or fort that matter fighting with swords made of 600 yr old Valeryan steel, but never thought to mix the niter on the dungeon wall (that gets mentioned about six times) with sulfur and charcoal. Suspend logic and enjoy.

The zombies are rotting, but the infection that animated them also causes them to deteriorate at a much slower rate than that of a genuinely dead uninfected corpse. If they rotted normally then they'd lose all mobility in less than a month, cease to be any sort of threat at all, and that would take all the fun out of the story. "Let's hole up somewhere and wait the designated 3 to 6 weeks for all the zombies to disintegrate completely via a rotting process and by being eaten up by insects and birds". "OK. I'll be in the basement of the bunker playing Nintendo for a couple of hours and then I'm going to have a big nap". "No problem, I'll have dinner ready when you get up". Not exactly compelling TV.

The address that in the comic book, it doesnt bode well for small groups of people who hunker in the bunker.

Two schools of thought on that one. One, that you have to stay permanently mobile to keep ahead of the zombie hordes or, two, that you can hunker down as long as the place you're in is secure and well-provisioned. Rick's group, in the earlier issues of the comic, was relatively well-off in the abandoned prison and only lost that particular refuge after they were attacked by other survivors who were led by a maniac. Their life on the road again didn't turn out all that well afterwards and they've entered a phase where they're relatively safe and comfortable back behind some seemingly solid walls again.
All in all, it's six of one and a half-dozen of the other. I'd go with the walls myself though. Much better afternoon napping potential.

Ehhhh, these storylines have been going on in the comic for the last 3 to 5 years now so they're long out of spoiler territory.

Play Nintendo? Heck, I'd be up on the roof with the different rifles and having fun. A zombie apocalypse would for me finally answer the question of why did I ever buy a black powder .50 rifle?

I assume that's a muzzle-loader? Sounds like fun but everyone using muzzle-loaders equals no survivors period. Too slow to reload and too damn difficult for any noobs to learn fast enough.
I read an article that said all this concentrating on headshots was a waste of time. Instead of going for a difficult kill shot just incapacitate the zombies by shooting them in the lower legs with a shotgun or rifle. Or put a round right into their lower back, sever their spine, and they'll fall to the ground uselessly as well. No more walking cuts their danger by at least a half if they have to resort to crawling after you. That's one of the few things about the zombie films and what not that pisses me off. Accurate shooting with handguns, especially in a stress-filled moment, is damn difficult for experienced shooters and damn near impossible for rookies to perform. Even in TWD sometimes the only one who makes any sense is (SPOilERZ) the girl who goes around hacking their heads and arms off with a katana. The TV show is even worse at pushing the boundaries on this too because at the reckless rate they're going through their ammo they're going to be well and truly fucked on supplies before too long.

Spoiler'sI think that's a point they will be making in the show come Feb, I also think they are going to bring the whole hoard aspect into it too. I feel it is very likely that all the gunfire from the last shoot out will draw a mass of zombies to the farm and they will be forced to move on. I dont know exactly where they show will go next, Kirkman has expressed an interest in injecting Michonne into the show but from the conversation I saw about it he has not written her in yet. I do have a feeling that this season will end the same way issue #08 did.
I've watched the 'Talking Dead' after the show several times and they make a point of saying that within roughly a 2 years most canned goods will start to spoil and most dry goods would be right after that. So some sort of stationary farming is required if the human race is to continue. I think the best way to combat the undead would be to have a large fortified area, reinforced with a maze of obstacles followed by a tank ditch of sorts.
Spoiler's A point they make time and time again in the comic is that Humans not the zombies are the most dangerous threat.
BTW I hope they kill off Lori the same way as in the comic, that part was pure genius!

Yes, it's a muzzle loader. But if I'm safe on a rooftop then I can take my time loading and firing.

A headshot is a lot easier than trying to bulls-eye a spinal cord.

Some people aim better under pressure. The 'quiet calm of combat' clears their mind and they're more focused. On the contrary, I've seen people who were awesome on the range freeze up under combat conditions.

These people are among the only living beings in rural Georgia? I assure you, they'd all be long dead and buried before they'll go through all the ammo in all the homes, cars, and pickup trucks in Georgia! Oh, and just wait until they get to the storage magazines at Fort Benning! OOOH-YAH!!!

Agreed on all counts. Except the dry good might disappear even faster. Any items left in warehouses and grocery store shelves, such as boxed cereals, is going to be rapidly consumed by mice and rats, and even any other herbivores like deer who might possibly be able to get into buildings or stores thriough open doors or shattered windows.

Just like Andy in the Dawn Of The Dead remake. "Shoot the one that looks like Burt Reynolds. OK, got him. Shoot the one that looks like Jay Leno. OK, got him. Shoot the one that looks like Rosie O'Donnell. Nah, too easy".

Larger body mass to hit though. Even if you miss the spine, by just shooting something like a shotgun shell into that general area you have a good chance of destroying a hip, which should be enough to slow the critter down quite significantly.

Worked for Andrea but she's still probably in the puny minority of survivors on this one.

Hard to search for ammo with the undead crowding around you. Going by how hard it was for Shane and Otis to even get near the med supplies at the infirmary set up next to the high school, I'm going to assume that a major base like Ft. Benning would be even more crowded with possibly tens of thousands of zombies who, when they were still living, went there for refuge. As such any military base might be as densely surrounded or infested by the critters as the cities were. If there's any soldiers left alive they've probably fortified themselves in and won't be willing to take any random civilian survivors in anyway. Soldiers are too dangerous to go near in an apocalypse scenario anyway. Rule of Zombie Movies #8: any surviving soldiers will automatically set up some sort of fascist rapist-wonderland dictatorship led by an insane officer; see Day Of the Dead (1985), 28 Days Later for best examples.
