I mentioned in another thread that i had wanted to see the series 'Pillars of the Earth'. I was wondering if anyone else has seen it, as it was on CBC. Does it look like it will be worthwhile and how closely does it follow the book? I've also read 'World without End', its sequel and while I enjoyed it, I didn't think it was as good as Pillars.

Part 1 was on CBC on Tuesday night. I'm getting a friend to burn the series for me as it's not being carried here.

I watched all 8 parts this last week, it was awesome! I hadn't heard about it until i saw an ad somewhere and emailed myself about it.

I would highly recommend it, very good acting and production values, its a Canadian-German production, mostly shot in Canada I believe.

I never read the book, so i don't know how good of an adaptation it is.

It's a fairly good adaptation. There are a few omissions from the book and some historical inaccuracies. Stephen was considered a nice guy but an ineffective and weak ruler, allowing the local barons to essentially become laws unto themselves, pillaging and plundering their lands and the lands of their neighbours.

Matilda/Maude was chased out of England by the populace, for being an unpopular ruler, after she recaptured the throne in 1141. However, one year before Stephen's death her party and Stephen's came to an arrangement whereby her son, the future Henry II, would become king after Stephen died. Henry didn't kill his cousin Eustace on the battlefield.

Loved the book. Did not enjoy the mini series very much at all....but I say that about every book turned movie with the exception of "The Stand"

I'm just about 200 pages into the book. Riveting.
