Quote:
“Pacific” is an upcoming World War II miniseries produced by HBO and Dreamworks and is the successor to HBO’s mega-hit, Band of Brothers. It is scheduled for a television release on HBO in March 2010. “Pacific” is based on the books “With the Old Breed,” by Eugene Sledge, which was hailed by historian Paul Fussell as “one of the finest memoirs to emerge from any war,” and “Helmet for My Pillow,” by Robert Leckie (recipient of the Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Annual Award), as well as original interviews conducted by the filmmakers and Hugh Ambrose. Continuing the World War II oral history work begun by his father Stephen E. Ambrose (author of the book “Band of Brothers”), Hugh Ambrose serves as a consultant on the miniseries.

I hadn't heard of this until a friend sent me a link today. Its looks like basically Band of Brothers in the Pacific. Produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg again.

Quote:
International TV networks have begun to purchase HBO’s The Pacific for a March 2010 release. A total of 10 episodes at 60minutes each will be shown on all the major networks ranging from the UK, to Germany, Asia, Austria, Switzerland and beyond. HBO billed the production as, “the biggest thing HBO has ever done” but also “the biggest production in the history of television,” given the scale and scope of the miniseries. It’s like making 10 major movies at once.

Sounds great. I guess I'll have to keep HBO for a bit longer now.

Meh. Entertaining, but no where near as good as BoB to this point.

There just are not any characters to really give a damn about.

William Sadler as the legendary "Chesty" Puller is the only one that interests me so far.

I agree. The scope of the Pacific War doesn't lend itself well to the formula that worked for Band Of Brothers.

Also, we haven't seen any of these characters develop from Basic training into Marines. They were either already in the Corps or after they said they enlisted the next time we saw them was on Guadacanal.

It's a really good series but up to this point it hasn't really been character driven like BoB.

It's hard to do a character-driven mini-series about combat with such high casualty rates as the War in the Pacific. So few men survived to fight in multiple battles. I thought the quality of the battle scenes has been far superior on the Pacific, so far, compared to anything filmed on BoB.

Yes, BoB was a masterpiece, but I don't see a need to compare the two. I find the role of the US Marine in the Pacific war much more compelling than paratroopers in Europe. Their odds of surviving were so much longer.
