LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Tom Hanks is attached to star as high-seas hero Capt. Richard Phillips in a movie about the rescue of crewmen from an American ship captured by Somali pirates.

Columbia Pictures picked up the life rights to Phillips, as well as his book, in spring 2009. The goal is to retell the story of the captain of the trading vessel Maersk Alabama who, in order to save his crew, surrendered to Somali pirates after his ship was hijacked.

The standoff, which commanded worldwide attention, tested the strength of Phillips and his crew as well as the resolve of the Navy commanders and President Barack Obama to bring Phillips home alive.

The project, with a script by Billy Ray, is being produced by the team behind "The Social Network," including producer Scott Rudin and actor Kevin Spacey.

Hanks just began shooting the Rudin-produced adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's 2005 novel, "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close." He returns to theaters in July with "Larry Crowne."

You understand Hollywood very well, my friend.

You should write movies. ;)

LOL ...

Hey guys first post from me. Currently living in California, from BC.

If you dig into the real life story deeper you find out the captain disobeyed direct guidelines from the US about going into that area ... guy is a retard who was trying to be a show off. The whole story is bogus and he created hype from nothing, which Hollywood will duplicate, once again. And THAT bullshit... is the true American story here. colleges review

I still can't picture Tom Hanks as a Somali Pirate.

Now for some reason I fit in with the pirates like one of them round pegs. It's not really hard. You just wear an eye patch and remember to light your beard on fire and always answer every question with "Yes, captain, sir!"
