I've been watching the Chernobyl mini-series on HBO and I gotta say it's pretty good. It's a riveting look at the human cost of the disaster as well as a look at how the inherent deficiencies in the Soviet system tried to downplay and then hide information of the accident even from the people who could have helped mitigate the damage.

Three episodes in out of five and it's totally worth watching.

What's wrong with Chernobyl? Nothing happened there. Every one is happy there. The Vladimir I Lenin Nuclear Power Station is a model of Soviet Efficiency and Genius. Everything else you hear is Capitalist Lies and Propaganda.

It was a pretty good series though. I knew most of the details already, but it was good to see they took the piece seriously. Even down to Soviet era diving masks, phones, cars, busses . . .!

Typical 'Russian' piece though. Russians like sacrifice, especially heroic sacrifice for the common good. And there definitely was a lot of that.

I like the part where Legasov asks something like "Is this how things are done? Some uninformed, unqualified party member makes an arbitrary decision that will cost millions of people their lives?"
