I wonder if there's any truth to this:

I admit it. I can sometimes be wrong about things. A year ago, I huffed my way through the pilot of Syfy’s The Magicians. The slick and sexy (and self-aware) show is based on Lev Grossman’s best-selling novel of the same name, and like that book, billed itself as an “adult Harry Potter.” Yes, that means it’s about a bunch of magical dweebs who go to a secret school for magic — but they drink and curse and have sex! OH MY!
Needless to say, I found the pilot to be a tad bit too cringe-worthy for my taste. Worse, the “ordinary kid who discovers he’s the magical chosen one who must defeat a great evil — but first WIZARD SCHOOL!” trope felt altogether overdone for me.
However, over the year, I kept hearing rumblings that The Magicians was actually good. If you could brave the wobbly first few episodes, it was supposed to turn into a smart and engaging series (that some critics are now hailing as the successor to Buffy the Vampire Slayer). And so I started to get curious. This past Sunday, I had a few hours to kill and a need for escapism, so I fired up Netflix and gave The Magicians another try. To my delight, Season One of The Magicians quickly morphed into one of the best and most satisfying binge-watches I can recall. Seriously! I only have one more episode left. I can’t stop watching it.
