Record job creation keeps unemployment rate steady

Statistics Canada's latest employment report has smashed a previous record for job creation, surpassing forecasts with 107,000 new jobs in September. But 97,000 of them are part-time.

The BNN's Michael Kane told Canada AM on Friday that the record report was unexpected as it was 10 times the number economists had been predicting.

The previous one-month record was in January of 2002 when 97,000 jobs were created and marks the biggest jump since the agency started collecting job information more than 30 years ago.

However, the numbers only held the country's unemployment rate steady at 6.1 per cent as the increases matched the number of people, 113,700, looking for work.

Kane said a notable aspect of the report was that the manufacturing sector grew by 1 per cent, or by 19,700 jobs.

"We've been so used to seeing the manufacturing jobs disappear and there in one month almost 20,000 manufacturing jobs created. That is an extremely encouraging sign and with the Canadian dollar slipping the way it has been below 89 cents; this is good news," Kane said.

OTTAWA - Job growth in Canada is about "to hit a wall," a report from Toronto-Dominion Bank warned Tuesday.

The warning comes as the federal election campaign enters its final week, and Conservative Party fortunes are slipping in part due to the economic turmoil in financial markets.

The report, written by economist Beata Caranci, said nearly all of the 87,000 new jobs created in the first eight months of 2008 were in the construction sector. Take away the construction industry and "Canada is left with a mere 500 new jobs," the report said.

Remove construction jobs from figures so far and Canada has created only 500 jobs this year, TD Bank says.

She said besides construction, the other job-creating engines in the Canadian economy have been the hospitality and science sectors. But, she added, "none have the staying power" to continue creating new jobs. As a result, "we believe momentum in job creation will hit a wall."

As a result, the TD report Canada would see roughly 30,000 jobs created over the next nine months. That compares to the 87,000 created so far this year and the 250,000 new jobs in 2007. The historical average for the period Jan. 1 to Aug. 31 in terms of job creation is roughly 156,000.

But, the report indicated that the Canadian job market is in far better shape than the United States. Unemployment may creep up to 6.7%, but that would still be lower than the unemployment rates seen over the three-decade period from 1975 to 2005.

Regionally, the Alberta job market, which has driven growth in recent years, will soften, while the Ontario market faces "some of the weakest near-term prospects" in Canada.

The conservatives just don't understand the economy when they say stuff like sheer job growth alone means the economy is humming along fine and dandy.

The banks are solid and looking to expand into the US market like never before.
Prices are fluctuating but folks still need beef, coal, oil and potash and Canada's future is excellent.

The scary part is that prior to the housing collapse in the US they had great job growth in construction also because so many people were buying houses. They just didn't realize that they were buying them all on the whole sub-prime mortgage crap. Then it all collapsed.

Vac truck drivers-$450.00/day...that's just one of the many good jobs available in Alberta.

Nunavut and BC are also recruiting from the east big time.While flying back home with the head of Agnico Eagle mines I asked where they would get the manpower from for their new mine....Newfoundland he said.
