Western provinces consider separation: poll

At least one-third of Western Canadians think it's time for their provinces to consider quitting Canada, a new poll suggests.

The survey was commissioned by Western Standard magazine, a right-leaning bimonthly news and opinion magazine founded in 2004 by Ezra Levant, a former Reform Party and Alliance Party activist.

The magazine's survey found that 35.6 per cent of respondents from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia agreed that "Western Canadians should begin to explore the idea of forming their own country."
The poll claims that Albertans, at 42 per cent, were most likely to consider independence, followed by Saskatchewan at 31.9 per cent.

"Westerners are very frustrated with their position in Confederation," said Faron Ellis, a political science professor at Lethbridge Community College, who conducted the survey.



This was from 2005, just watch the numbers go through the roof now that Eastern Canada has basically said "screw you" to anyone living west of Ontario.

Personally, I can't blame them if they seperated.

Since the Libs and Dippers don't give a crap about national unity, the west should just go ahead and seperate. I for one would be the first one to leave the sinking ship of Ontario for BC or Alberta.

It ought to be about thirty more seconds before someone from the other side comes along and says to you "love it or leave it" or "don't let the door hit you on your way out". This unfortunately is the depth of what they have to offer to the crisis.

But how can you blame westerners for feeling this way? All 3 opposition leaders were born in Quebec.

The west voyed 65% in favour of Harper. That's a MASSIVE majority and now eastern Canada is thumbing their nose at all of those Canadians.

I think that is a very astute observation. What happens when it comes time to introduce a climate change plan which is going to have to happen within the possible life span of this co-idiot-alition. Westerners all ready see such a move as an attack on their provinces incomes? It would have been bad enough for the Conservatives to make such a move but when an un-elected coalition who's power base is in the east tries ...... heaven help them.

The West has finally been enjoying some of the influence that many Eastern provinces have had for years. When bail outs to Eastern provinces start happening and the West see that not only are none of those aimed at us but the money for those programs is also coming from our coffers the not so old resentments of the past will be resurected and will continue to build.
