Filibuster Cartoon
Title: A Golden Day (click to view)
Date: September 22, 2007

At 10:59 AM, on Thursday, September 20, the Canadian Dollar officially eclipsed the US dollar in value by several fractions of a cent. It\'s the first time it\'s happened in more than 30 years.

It\'s hard to understate how important this event is to Canadians. Having a low-valued dollar is such a firm component of the Canadian identity... to finally have escaped from that role is to challenge everything we thought we knew.
Meh, been there and done that (rock an' roll style) with Sterling. When I say "rock an' roll style, I mean "boom and bust with several rocky and embarrasing devaluations."

At first, you're really excited because that means you get more Dollars to spend when you're at Disneyland Florida but when you find that business can't really compete if your currency is stronger against the dollar then the 'acheivement' loses its shine pretty damn quickly.

On the good side though you can get threadless shirts at pretty much half price with Sterling, so I guess its okay.

If this is such a great thing how come the price of gas has not dropped?

If our dollar is now worth so much more why doesn't it by more imported stuff?

All it has done is put people out of business and others out of work.

This article made me think of JJ's "Canada's Elite" page when it said "Frank McKenna, 59, deputy chairman of Toronto-Dominion Bank, the country's third-biggest lender, and a former ambassador to the U.S."

Also, a question: how much credit does Harper's government deserve for the parity?

Meanwhile, I just got finished listening to another one of Bush's speeches where he claims the economy has had "uninterrupted success." Our money is depreciating, and the euro and loon are starting to whip our asses. Meanwhile, he's assailing the Democrats in congress for raising taxes, while he's doing nothing but supporting billions in waste to government privatization. But I digress. Congratulations Canada, you've earned this.

It's good for the worker. Not so good for the exporter.

We just need to adjust that's all. Import more and sell less and we won't need to sell as much to maintain t he quota we need becuase the dollars worth more.

Frankly I'm not quite so worried. It just means the job markets going to be in for a big shift if the dollar stays this high.

This has to be my third favorite comic from Filibustercartoons.com, behind the one about the failed coup against Hugo Chavez and especially the one drawn after Boris Eltsin's death.

I'm not entirely sure that peaking at $1.0008 is "whipping our asses," but....

Not too much- loonie has been rising for some time partly because of a good Canadian economy but mostly because the American economy is so shitty and the price of oil and gold is super high. All of those factors Harper does not have any control over. All of this stuff was happening in Paul Martin's government.

I always love to see the transformation of Chavez in your cartoons as his reputation worsened.

As far as the cartoon evolution/evolving caricature goes, what's really fun is to see what Martin looked like when he was just Chretien's cabinet minister
