Filibuster Cartoon
Title: A Patriotic Day (click to view)
Date: July 02, 2007

This is more or less how I spent my Canada Day. I saw \"Sicko\" but it raised more questions than answers. It was really my first glimpse of the US healthcare system in any detail, but I know better than to give Michael Moore the benefit of the doubt.

I am sure it will be a popular movie in Canada, however, as it reaffirms our worst fears about what goes on in the United States. The portrayal of Canada is utopian to the point of fraud, however. Even the most rabidly anti-American Canadian will have to squirm in his seat when Moore presents wait times of 20 to 45 minutes as \"average\" for Canadian emergency rooms.

All your news belong to ME! Whahaha I eat news!

That's been about the average wait for whever my wife or I or our kids end up in emerg....... but then....when we go to emerg it really is an emergency.... not a cough, bump, or bruise.

Why hasn't someone poisoned that fat bastard yet? Its not like it'd be hard, he probably doesn't even chew.

I've never spent less than an hour at the hospital, I love how they just tell you to go other parts of the hospital, never mind you're bleeding and barely conscious. When I broke my collar bone, I was unaware what it cost to take an ambulance here in Alberta, well shit, I woulda walked if I knew it cost $360.

Well, when my lungs decided to go into deep degraded mode earlier this year, I just picked a pulmonologist off my insurer's provider list, and called them up. They had me in within the hour, and it turned out that that wonderful LA air had set off my old ashma, and combined with a viral bronchitis, to put me at, oh 30% normal human being lung capacity. They got me patched up pretty quick, and as long as large parts of the city aren't burning down, I'm in pretty good shape.

On emergency room trips, I do recall, when my middle brother went through the window, it didn't take them very long at all to have everything very neatly bundled up (as in they were coming otu to meet us as we were coming in). Did take them 30m to an hour or so before they started stitching him back up, but that, I think has more to do with the complexity of the repairs needed, rather than any particular slowness on their part. (Dad has some wonderful stories from that night. Gets home, the light's out, and the car's gone. "Quilt group tonight? No, that's a different night. Did we have a fight? Don't think so." Gets to the door, and there's a note from my Aunt: "Don't Panic")

Perhapse I've just had a unique and non-typical view of the US health-care system. Who knows?

When this tub of lard has sat in one of our emerg rooms for 14 hours in pain with 50 other people two days after major surgery to see a doctor because something has gone wrong then that sack of excrement can pontificate about the Canadian health system all he likes. The nurses were great and did all they could but they said this was the "norm".
As for Sicko i wouldn't waste my time.

I took a guy to emergency and we were told the wait was six hours, we left after an hour. I myself have waited three hours for treatment. That's far too long.

treatment for what? Was it an emergency or could you have seen your doctor about it? Or do you use the hospital emerg's like your own personal on call medical facility?

Guess what, because of the doctor shortage in Canada I don't have a family Doctor. Just assume what you want to because that's how you justify your arguments. Do you know how an emergency room works? First you see a triage nurse, they let you know if they think you should stay. My problem wasn't dire, I wasn't in a car accident however three hours is far too long to wait for medical care.

2 words..... walk-in clinic.

Then you don't tie up the emergency ward and it can be used for....here's a concept....emergency's.

OK everyone note this moment in history here. I agree with Gerry on this point. People are to often using the ER for things that should been seen by a family doctor or walk in clinic.

So you are going to go ahead and without any medical training assume my problem wasn't an emergency. I guess that's how you win all your arguments you just BS and assume. Good job. You really are a nut.

Read my post to Jury, who are you to assume my problem wasn't an emergency?
