Filibuster Cartoon
Title: Abbas\' Pinata (click to view)
Date: June 18, 2007

In Palestine, conflicts between the rival political parties that control the pseudo-state\'s presidency and the parliament have spiraled into outright civil war. In Gaza, thugs loyal to the terrorist group Hamas, and its parliamentary majority, seized control of the offices of the Fatah president Mahmood Abbas, driving him and his loyalists out. The President responded by dissolving parliament, firing the Hamas prime minister, and granting himself emergency powers.

The move delighted the United States and European Union, who have always hated Hamas and refused to support any Palestinian government of which it was a part. The western aid that was cut off from Palestine following the Hamas election has now begun flowing freely once more.

Economist: After the showdown

Quote:
However, there are some signs that the split between Hamas and Fatah could prove less devastating than pessimists fear. One reason is that the clashes in Gaza may have been, in part, Hamas settling scores against an individual, Mohammed Dahlan, a reviled Fatah strongman, rather than a Hamas attempt to destroy Fatah as a whole. Hamas members always hated Mr Dahlan, who was Yasser Arafat’s security chief in Gaza in the 1990s. The forces under his command were responsible for arresting and torturing many Hamas militants. In last week’s fighting Mr Dahlan’s house and offices were looted and destroyed and many of his henchmen fled (he had left Gaza two months before for an operation). Now that they have gone, the tension may yet ease a little.

Mr Dahlan may have been a big part of the problem. Other Fatah leaders, such as Ahmed Hallis, the group’s secretary-general in Gaza and a man who harboured a thinly disguised contempt for Mr Dahlan, managed to stay behind when many top Fatah folk fled in fear for their lives. He is now reportedly in talks with Hamas. In addition, Hamas's leaders are trying to achieve the release of a kidnapped BBC journalist, Alan Johnston, who has been held for months. If they succeed they would hope to demonstrate they have genuine control of Gaza, after the chaos of the past few months.

CSM: UN says food will run out in about 10 days if Gaza stays sealed
Quote:
Amid the violence last week, the main provider of fuel to Gaza, the Israeli company Dor Alon, stopped the supply lines because of a lack of anyone to coordinate with on the Palestinian side. On Monday, however, the energy company announced that it would renew the sale of gas to stations in Gaza. Later this week, Israel's minister of infrastructure is expected to hold meetings with all of the companies that supply utilities to Gaza – including water, electricity, and fuel – to discuss whether Israel can continue being a supplier to Gaza at all. It issued an order Monday to stop cargo shipments.
"Prime Minister Haniyeh already gave instructions to all his ministers to deal with Israeli counterparts for logistical and practical support that [is necessary] to meet Palestinian needs," says Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum.

But everyone Israel used to coordinate with on the Palestinian side is no longer there, says Mr. Regev. "Are we supposed to work with militants, when these are the same militants who are holding Gilad Shalit?" (Israeli army Corporal Shalit was kidnapped outside Gaza about a year ago.)

How about every time a rocket is launched out of Gaza into Israel, all water, electricity and gas is cut. The only way Fatah can regain control of Gaza is with the assistance of Israel.

That is if Fatah even want to have the Gaza Strip back!

I have every sympathy for the Palestinians, disagree with the idea of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, etc, etc, but one thing that always infuriates me with them is the fact that they simply haven't a clue about how to go about doing something without resorting to tactics which always end up in chaos, misery and suffering.

No, if I were Abbas, I'd leave the buggers sealed up in their mini-state and let them starve, teach em' a lesson about what happens when they insist on playing with fire. And if any civilians suffer in the process, well, they can hardly say that they "voted for the other guy" considering that most of em' voted emphatically for Hamas in the elections! They knew exactly what was going to happen when they voted for the gun toting men in green, they've made their bed, now they have to sleep in it and it serves them right.

Looks like Abbas finally figured out that you cannot "work with" terrorists. They're never satisfied with anything, and Rule #1 of the Dissatisfied Terrorist is "Blow Something Up".

With any luck, the Palestinian people will follow Abbas' lead, thus clearing the way for a REAL Palestinian State.

We already have one, it's called Jordan.

I've said it before too. Out of the old Mandate the Arabs were given 85 % (Trans Jordan) and the Jews 15 %(Israel). The Jews were given far less than they were originally promised.

That video matches what I've been told pretty well, though I think the Jewish deli jokes are pretty useless.

Yes we all know what they were offered but two problems:

1) Trans-Jordan is now Jordan, who isn't exactly keen on becoming a Palestinian superstate any time soon, hence why they are keen on those "right of return" talks.
2) The Palestinians turned down the offer back when it was offered in 1947/8.

Fact is that they'll have to settle for the West Bank and the Gaza strip.

Very true, it was supposed to be, but of course Arafat blew that away with the coup attempt he tried to launch with his PLO in the '60s.

Jordan SHOULD be the "real Palestinian State", but that's just not going to happen at this point.

EDIT: Well, not short of an Israeli invasion, a toppling of the Jordanian government, and forced relocation of the Palestinians at what would amount to gunpoint. Also not going to happen. -
