I wouldn't get violent over land in Israel, either. But get enough millions who believe a thing and some fraction of them will be willing to be violent just based on the law of averages. Buddhists are supposed to be absolute pacifists, but Ghandi's assassin was Buddhist and rationalized his actions as protecting Buddhism. It's the same institutional principles vs. institutional survival conflict that inevitably arises for any institution.
My own vaguely defined reasons for my vague support of Israel aren't very religious. I figure God can ensure His will comes to pass without my political support, and it's pretty dangerous for me to be our pretending I know His will anyway.
News of Israel preventing dictatorships from getting nukes inch me closer to their side, but the majority of the difference remains Israel's unrequited rhetorical support for Palestine's existence. Israel's certainly not infallible, but their commitment to mutual non-violent coexistence seems stronger. This is still just a vague impression, though. With so few of the facts accepted by both sides, it's hard to tell what is real and what is partisan storytime.
Yes, I agree with you on that. All of that actually. That's too bad. I was looking forward to a good argument.
