Filibuster Cartoon
Title: Burma helps itself (click to view)
Date: May 06, 2008

The death toll for this week\'s devastating cyclone in Burma is now said to have surpassed ten thousand deaths.

A great deal of these deaths have been entirely preventable, and are the result of the Burmese military government\'s crazy paranoia. Western aid workers, including those from the United Nations, have not be allowed to enter the country to provide relief to the disaster zone. Instead, the third-world ramshackle dictatorship has been attempting to handle the crisis all by itself, with predictably dismal results.

I can't see the comic. It appears that it wasn't uploaded properly. It should be here (without the spaces):

The death toll for this is horrendous. And the junta seems to be doing all it can to exacerbate the misery.

I heard their rice growing industry has almost been wiped out.

Things will get worse.

A cartoon has to be made about which martial arts are true: the ones practiced by the army or the ones practiced by monks.

.. yeah.. good one Benoit..

I read an interesting, if chasm-jumping attack on the great wave of colonial independance that Burma was part of. How these small, struggling countries were totally unprepared for independance and how leaving them on their own was like:
"giving a 10 year old a car, a rifle and a credit card as a gowing away present".

Sorry to say that this wouldn't be a problem with a British Burma right now.

This is why, until a new relationship can settle the past, there will be suicidal attacks when a Western cartoonist degrades a tradition.

Are you speaking of Islam, or the Hatfields and McCoys?
