The fruit-picker comment goes for tree planters too and even the many people I know here who are of french canadian descent and fluent sound like an old tractor firing up if they're addressed in French.
Umm, uh,well,shit... and then they answer the guy in French.
I'm from the era they first made French mandatory from Grade 8 on and honest to God never, ever even encountered a francophone accent until I moved to the boonies. Once, just once I ran into a tree planter who couldn't (or wouldn't) address me in English and I was with a Congolese friend who translated.
Two Canadians you both laugh at me for wearing toque in July to keep de bugs from my hair, but you can't talk to each other. Very strange country.
